OBD2 Scan Tool

Does anyone have a OBD2 scan tool I could borrow? It's time for my emissions test and I need to read some CEL codes from my 993? I'll be at this weekend's AX. Thanks Glenn

Glenn,
If you reset codes on your 993 it will not pass the functional part of the emission test. Part of the test is plugging the emission (smog test) machine into your 993 and it looks for system readiness, which is a series of self tests that the car makes over many different conditions (specific temp, road speed, engine speed, load, fuel level etc.) so if you don't have an engine light on or any codes DO NOT hit the clear all codes button!

If you do have to reset it you must run a drive sequence before it goes to testing.

Many 993's just won't pass this test in a reasonable amount of time because they are not driven "Normally" and must visit a BAR referee station for testing.

Thanks for the info. I went through this BS two years ago. Currently, my CEL is on, has been for a long time. I want to see what is tripping it and then determine if I want to go through the hassle of getting it fixed, resetting the CEL and then cycling through the readiness codes. I'm really close to taking the car off the street since it is slowly becoming a track car. I was hoping for two more years of driving it on the street and scaring the &*%# out of my neighbors. I might just try the smog referee.

Remember to get a failed test before going to the referee, they can be pretty sticky about the proceedure.

Glen: I went through the same process after my CEL was reset.
I couldn t get the readines codes in time for the smog check so I made an appointment at the referree. Steve is correct in saying that you need to fail before seeing a referree however if you mention to them when making the appointment that there is a known issue with 993 and getting readiness codes they will waive the failed test requirement.
My appointment was set and the tests were done at Miramar college. This was the smoothest smog check I had ever had on any of my vehicles.....except for the college kid who kept stalling the car trying to back it up on the rollers

I can bring my OBDII scanner to the AutoX, it will require a PC to get the detail desription for the Porsche codes. I can email the detail printout to you later in the evening or bring a PC with me and you can write them down.

If your car uses the old style round plug (964), then my scanner won't work with your car at this point, because I have not finished sodering the adapter together yet.

You can borrow the scanner from Autozone, you give them a deposit and they give it back when you return the tool.

Glenn I have scan tool that will tell you what the code is and will also tell you if your readiness codes are set as well.
