Helmet Visor

Postby blakebastain on Thu Jan 21, 2016 8:06 pm

Bought a new helmet. Not trying to wait for the 2015s to come out, because $160 for a new helmet every five years still makes 'helmet cost' the _least_ expensive part about racing.

New helmet has a plastic sun visor on it. I dislike this visor. Can I take it off? And, if I do take it off, can I leave the four screws out of the screw holes? You know, I'm trying to save weight, so I can go faster.

yes, you do not need to have the visor

If you keep it and have it down, it does give you extra eye protection

It's not the eye protection; it's like the brim on a baseball hat.

Hey Blake,

You're talking about the visor on an open faced helmet, right? The ones I have seen don't appear to add any safety benefit (just sun protection), so yes, I believe you can remove it.

Better check with Steve to see if you need to take any points for the weight reduction though...

Blake,
Yes, they are easily removable. I just pulled all of them off the new PCA-SDR helmets, since they just get bounced around in the trailer and broken. As alluded to above, I believe sun protection only as they are not super thick or strong plastic...maybe useful in an open top car with the top down for glare reduction. 4 phillips head screws. You could opt to put them back in, with the little piece of black plastic between the holes (otherwise the screws don't go flush). But just leaving them out is a fine option.

Lucky you, with the Cupcake's heart transplant complete, your class might be competitive again now... ;)
