An M3 comparison

Postby kary on Sun Dec 18, 2005 11:43 am

Was just reading an article European Car magazine about a tuned BMW E46 M3 where they tried 4 different suspensions (stock, B+G, H&R, and GC) using toyo T1R Ultra High performance tires. They were running SOW clockwise with the bowl. Just so happens we have some data on that track with our cars so I thought I would look to see.

The M3 using various suspension set ups turned a 94.47 with the stock suspension turning a 96.2.

Comparing that to our Street stock classes from a single event that woul dnot have beaten the Boxster S in MSS classand barely beat (.2) a 944 spec car.

Anyway, I thought is was interesting to see some data from a known track that we run.

I put 70,000 miles on my 2001 E46 M3 with AC Schnitzer "street" suspension which resulted in a stiff street ride feel very similiar to a stock 996 GT3 but no where near the handling of my 2005 Boxster S.

At Cayman S training last week we got to run competitive comparison autocross laps v/s the street stock 333hp M3 and 400hp Corvette.

I was really surprised that not only did the Cayman S significantly out handle the others, it had noticeably faster straight line acceleration too!

It would be nice then to watch a racing series where a Porsche could beat an M3.

Grand Am or Grand Am Cup anyone?
