Custom Painted Helmets

Postby sean996 on Sun Aug 22, 2004 9:48 am

I have seen a few custom painted helmets down at the autocross....two of them had an Eddie Irvine design. One guy told me he got it from some place in Orange county....like for $400 with the paint job.

Anyone know who this outfit is?

Thanks

Can't speak for all custom painted helmets, but the Eddie Irvine helmet is a production helmet from Bieffe. It was available from any Bieffe store but since Eddie is out of F1 these days this may be an out of production product by now.

I have the Eddie helmut. I bought it at CFOS this year and it is a standard Bieffe. I did get a great deal at $275, so am guessing it may be discontinued. They do have other designs and it seems to cost about $50-100 extra to get a std painted helmet versus the $250 and up for painting one. I am not creative enough to come up with a better design, so despite Burl having the same helmet, I was very happy with it.

I guess it's true, everyone wants to be like Burl.

It seems to start at either the helmet or the ignition key, and we'll have to see how far it goes...

If you want to tackle a paint job yourself and save a few bucks, I found some really interesting paint at Pep Boys. They have a multitude of factory match spray colors by Plasticote. I normally detest most canned spray paints, but this stuff is really pretty good. They also have, for $8 per 6oz can, Chameleon paint in 2 different shades. Green to gold, and blue to green to purple. Theya also have holographic black, which is pretty neat also. I wound up using all 3 colors. It is a 3 step system with a sandable primer, the colors, and a clear coat. All are sandable with a fine wet dry paper, and the clear coat can be polished to a very high gloss. All things considered, I was pretty impressed by the paint. Try it yourself. The worst you can do is waste a few cans of paint.

Good luck.

Contact David Yoest. He does F1 quality work. I don't have his number handy, but I'll bet you can reach him through Dave Turner Motorsports at 858.571.3811. He usually has business cards on the counter?
