I am not that familiar with the water-pumping Porsches, but I don't understand why you would think the 2001 model is superior to the later 996s. In general, the Porsche factory has always strived to improve each iteration of a design for a new model year, adding a little horsepower and refining problem areas that have appeared. I would have to guess that given equal examples, the 2001 would be superior only in price.

But don't listen to me, I'm one of those who think that God and Ferry Porsche rested after 1998, when the bean-counters took over the factory. :D

Actually, it was 1973, but you "Real Carreras Have 4 Cams" guys are still arguing about that. :D

Was your 356 in your trailer at the last autox, Ted? I saw you pull into the lot at the Q but never had time to talk to you. I saw the pics of it that JR posted on the 'net and it looked great. I'm glad you were able to bring it back to life after that little tumble at Palm Springs!

I'm just confuse between a classic 89 Speedster and a 2001 996 Turbo. Price is compatible, but two diffrent looks and performance. Will the 89 Speedster hold it value in the $50K for low mile of 10K?
Thanks Tom

Those are two VERY different cars. The '89 Speedster was a limited edition of 2,065 examples. Of this total production run, only 823 arrived in North America. They were nearly $100K new and have depreciated to the $45-50K level where they have leveled off. If it is in perfect, original condition, it may well keep its value for some collector IF YOU DON"T DRIVE IT MUCH! But what's the point in that? Unless you are looking for an original, classic Porsche to show or only drive on sunny Sundays, I would be very hesitant. If the mileage is as low as you say (10K), it has had less than 750 miles per YEAR put on it. That is hardly enough to have brought it up to operating temp once every week or two, which is pretty much essential to maintaining the mechanicals, fluids, seals, etc. If it was stored for a long period of time, that can be very hard on the car's mechanical systems as well, unless it was done correctly. I would be very careful about inspecting the car for any maintenance/repair needs, leaks, etc. before plunking down my hard-earned cash on it.

The 2001 996 Twin Turbo was built in greater numbers, and was also priced from $105-130K new, depending on options. It has depreciated faster and can now be found in the $50-70K range used. It is a much more modern technology and far higher performance car than an '89 Carrera. It may be more expensive to maintain, and may depreciate further, but for my money, the driving experience would be worth it. The Turbo, along with the GT2 and GT3, are the only 996 models that I would consider owning, personally.

YMMV,
