My WSIR "slow" excuse :)

I did this to the rear tires in Sunday morning warmup. The 710's did NOT like my 125mph entry speed into turn 8. They were on their last legs. Glenn Marlin was looking up in his rear view mirror when this happened!! I kept it on the track (and didnt lose much ground to Glenn..ha ha)

Tires: My excuse for running SLOW in the timed runs.

What's yours??

Oh.. I also wanted to thank Chris Benbow, Otto Obrist, Jim Binford, and Mark Foley for helping me understand WSIR. I couldnt have pulled off the 36's in the little 2.5 car without you!!. Thanks for the encouraging words.

Brad:
Your tires blistered because your rims are red. Use blue paint next time.

Damn! I knew those red rims were holding me back :) I ran the first two sessions on the Silver rims with the Bridgestone Potenza's... that was fun!!. Switched to the 710's and dropped 4.5 seconds.

Brad:

You surely did fine at Willow for a first timer. It appears you have seen many a race track before to be such a quick study. Congratulations to you and the gang at Mind Over Motorsports for preparing such a good performing and eye-appealing little Boxster.

I'd like to second the thanks to Otto. He got me up to speed on an extreamly difficult track very quickly. Sorry Otto, I just couldn't make myself do turn 8 at full throttle with the wind blowing at me. I also never got the braking point quite late enough for turn 9.

Maybe next time.

I have *some* track time from NorCal. Thill/Laguna/Sears/ButtonWillow

The Boxster was a absolute JOY to drive. I'm VERY familiar with the mid-engine platform in AutoX/TT/RR. Nevermind the car was dialed in straight out of the box. All I had to do was drive.

Martin Reinhardt had the same issues with one of his rear 710's after a couple of sessions and I see JHP has listed a full set after this weekend. What's this say about the 710s?

Great times by the way! :D

36 is a good time for your first time there in a 2.5. 125 into 8 is good also, is that with your foot flat? Next you need to work on not braking for 9, and just a light tap for 1. Loads of time can be made up on that track from 5 to 3.... if you got the cajones ;).

How far away from spec is the car? 36's on 710's is about a 38 on Victoracer, maybe. I was hoping for a 35 or 36 class. Looks like it's real close. Very nice to see.

BTW, don't let Ethan's 31 discourage you. He's a better driver than he lets on, and his car is where I wanted to take the Spec Class. Too bad most of my good (i.e. fast) suggestions fell on deaf ears :?.

Bill:

A 1:36 in your 968 the first time out at Big Willow is a great achievement. Viewing the way you drive from the passenger's seat tells me that I might be taking some lessons from you in the very near future. Your "save" at the exit of 9 when you ran out of road was outstanding and showed that you had graduated as a driver a long time ago. You obviously also realized what it will take to ran a faster lap at Willow the next time.

Foot flat in 4th gear from the hill up to six all the way into the flat before 9. I was VERY slow into 1 with a fast exit. I was full throttle in fourth from the exit of 1 to the entrance of 3. Downshift into 3rd and full throttle up the hill and down to 4.. never "got" 4 correct. Upshift to 4th gear at the flat portion of 6...

It is currently heavy. Other than that.. it needs a few more roll bar tubes to be 100% spec legal. We still have door panels/radio/windows/heater core/stock muffler... The car has a high 34 in it on the 710's.

When I get Ethans seat time at WSIR.... Give me 3-4 events.

All I can say is my data acquisition tells me my stock 3.6 993 motor was entering turn 8 at 122 and exiting at 126 going to turn 9 which was flat out. If your 2.5 Boxster was doing that speed then I need to have my motor checked out or your speedo is wrong :)

Mike, you must be kidding. Don't brake for 9 at 125+  I don't see that as possible, at least not in my car. Only a tap in 1, mybe a hard tap. Turn 1 seemed to always catch me, unless I missed the apex so I could see how you could minimize braking there. But I was braking hard for 1 even when I entered really fast. I obviously still have a lot to learn about WSIR. :?

We talked about this quite a bit and cars had speeds all over the place, all of them over what Ethan's data acquisition said. I know mine said 120ish entering 8, but I didn't look too closely.
