Tires for BW

I have some Yoko slicks that have a lot of life left in them that I'm willing to give away to anyone who can make good use of them at BW.
They are 230/650/18 (9.06 inches wide and 25.59 inches diam.)and 280/680/18 (11.02 wide and 26.77 diam.)

Tires...

I have ABS. I wonder if the one plus inch height will de-activate it. If you don't think so, I'll surely take them. Where and when can I get them? I will of course come to you. Or, pick them up at BW. Your call (assuming you haven't already gotten rid of them).

The diameter difference will definitely be an issue on a 993. A normal 993 does not and should not run that large of a diameter in the rear. You will likely have rubbing issues as well given the tire being too tall.

Forrest,
I don't know if they will fit your car. Note Kary's post about rubbing. If it was just an ABS problem, I wouldn't worry about that. I ran some Kumhos on my GT3 that disabled the ABS, and not having ABS didn't bother me at all. Personally, I go faster w/o ABS than with. When I took the Kumhos off, the ABS automatically started up again. The problem with the Kumhos was, I believe, the difference in diam. between the front and rear tires. If the ratio between the front and rear Yokos is the same as your stock setup (or close), the ABS will probably work, but I'm not an expert on this --this is just my guess. The "rubbing" is the bigger issue that you need to check. Since you were the first to want the tires, they are reserved for you. Let me know what you want to do.

Forrest, also note that should you run slicks, you will automatically be bumped from NP to MI. Once you are in Improved (or above), you need additional safety considerations including a roll bar and open-ended steel lug nuts (I think). You probably already have these items (though I'm not sure), but if not you need to consider the impact of the rules when switching to slicks. There may be other considerations too; I'm not the rule expert. I'd suggest reading them in full before making any decisions.

Rubbing...

I'm running shaved RA-1's now with 245/40 in the front and 305/35 in the rear. These are mounted on 996 TT wheels, so the rears are moved in 8mm. I have no rubbing issues, even without having rolled the fenders. I am unfamiliar with the sizing methods for slicks, so the posted numbers really mean nothing to me. I don't really care about getting bumped into MI, C4S's are kindo screwed on the points thing anyway. I got 7 points when stock for wider stance and big reds, and this puts all C4S's in to NP. I do have a 4 point roll bar and steel lugs, though, just to be safe. Mostly I just want to know how my car will do with serious traction. The RA-1s wear like iron, but don't really have super grip. Those of you in the know can definitely influence me here. If they won't fit under my fenders, and are likely to disconnect my ABS, then I will relinquish my 'claim' to them. If they will work, I want to try them.

thanks everybody...

Forrest,
I gave you the tire diameter and width in inches (in my first post)!!!
Just compare this to what you're using now and let me know. There's no mystery or complexity here--just use a tape measure.
Thanks,
John

Or just look it up on the Toyo site at http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_specsheet.cfm?id=1 It looks like the RA-1s you are running now are:
245/40R18 -- 25.6 dia. x 9.65 width
305/35R18 -- 26.3 dia. x 12.5 width

That looks very close to the dimensions JHP gave:
230/650/18 (9.06 inches wide and 25.59 inches diam.)and 280/680/18 (11.02 wide and 26.77 diam.) The Yokos look to be a tad narrower, which should help with any rubbing problem, but they are .4" higher in the rear. Having no experience with 4WD or ABS, I cannot say what difference this will make to those systems, but they look like they will fit in the fender well, at least.

Knowing how TT is, I'm confident his math is good. So they'll fit under the car. Anybody want to wade in here on the ABS? The system works as designed with the Toyos, but the difference is 0.7 inches (diameter) verses 1.18 with the Yokos.

It seems you might just have to try them and learn....One last note, you are changing your gearing quite a bit due to the rear diameter change. You will/should notice the difference.

I will see you in MI, though I am not sure if I should be behind you or in front of you given your ABS woes...  :o

If you still have the AWD don't do it. The viscous system in the 993 will be very unhappy.

Yeah, Jad, the awd is all gone. Thanks for the input Kary, although I'm only a moving chicane to you.

John, I'll take 'em. How would you like me to get 'em from you?

Thanks to all for inputs!
