Report on the Dunlop tires

I have been busy since I returned from Laguna last month, but wanted to report back on my experience with them on a big track. I like the tires in the auto-x (the time before last) because the tires heated up quickly but did not get slick as runs went on. This was the same on the big track. I ran 3 20 minutes sessions with these tires and really liked them. I found them to be 3.5 to 4 seconds slower than the Pirelli slicks I ran that weekend though the Dunlops seems to be comparable to the Hooiser's and MPSC when comparing relative times of different cars. The wear was very good considering the tires are in the soft compound league of the Hoosiers. I was running them with some very high camber but it appears tht they would like about 1.5 to 2 degrees in the rear and something comparable in the front. I ran them at 37 and 39 hot with very even wear.

Overall I think this tire is a good alternative to other "drive to the track and race and drive home" types. Much more tread (8/32nds, no shaving requried) and seem to hold up very well. I have run a driving school (about half a school), and an auto-x, 2000 miles on the street, and 60 minutes on a big track and have 5-6/32nds on the rear and 6-7/32nds on the front. Not bad considering.

Specifically, how would you compare them with the benchmark in our club, the victoracer, on lap time and wear? Also, how are the sizes?

Questions --

Michael, The tires are the Dunlop SP Super Sport Race.

Jad, In terms of wear I have not yet worn out a set of Dunlop's so that would be hard to determine. They seem to be wearing very well so far given the time I have on them. I always found the Victoracers to wear well though their stick was not always that good toward the end. As far as lap times I think the Dunlop's are up with the hoosier laps time which is always faster than the Victoracers. The compound is the same softeness as a Hoosier so the real diference between the two is the tread and the 8/32nds depth. You are likely to get more wear out of the Dunlop's on that simple point.

Sizes are really only in 18" at this time. Good choices though 225/235/245/255/265 and 285. Beware, the sizes are a bit larger than then say. I have these on my web site if you want the details for each tire. There some 17" but I think in 225 and 245 only at this time. Not much of a choice right now in 17" tires.

This just in...tirerack is dumping these tires for less than half price for a set in 18". I am not sure why but this is a good buy for an 18" track/street tire!!!

Hey Kary,

The Tire Rack is blowing these things out for half the price they used to be. Any idea why? Is Dunlop discontinuing this model?
