Race Gas/Machtane

Postby David J Marguglio on Mon Sep 27, 2004 2:06 pm

TomCom recommended some place off Convoy for race gas and Machtane. Does anyone know the name or location? Tired of driving to Santee. :(

David,

I use to buy 76 race gas for the 550 Spyder from (it is close to the stadium):

COSBY OIL COMPANY
6220 FAIRMOUNT AVE, SAN DIEGO, CA 92120
Phone: (619) 280-6884

The race gas thing can be a pain.

BTW, If one has a Cosby Oil credit card, one can fill up at the pumps with unleaded and leaded racing gas. Very convenient to do before an event.

There is a place off Convoy near the 52. It's the Mustang tuning shop next door to the detailing/concours prep tech session location a couple of months ago. Sorry I don't remember the names...I'm old. Jim Binford buys his racing fuel there.

Bob- It is technically illegal to fill the tank of an operating street car with leaded race fuel in CA. The guys at Cosby told me this when I opened my account. It is sold for offroad use only, and you are supposed to fill only proper storage containers from the pump. I imagine if the car was on an open trailer, you could pump directly into its tank, though. Since Cosby pumps are available 24/7 and unattended much of the time, I'm sure you could get away with it, and certainly the 100 unleaded race gas can be used for a fill on a street car, but the leaded gas is a no-no.

No racing gas can be legally pumped into a car driven on the street. The lead is not the only issue.

There's that tax thing!!

Big fine if you get caught!

Tim: that was the Santee trip I was trying to avoid.

Bob: thanks for the info, I am off to find a Cosby card.

Does anyone know the name or address of the place Hal mentioned? Thanks.

Did the C&D Motorcycles thing not work out either? On Convoy?

100 octane directly into car

Postby Jim Knoke on Tue Sep 28, 2004 1:37 pm

Steve,

Does that apply to CA only? The Rebel station in the middle of Pahrump has 100 octane "unleaded racing" fuel that anyone can directly pump into his/her car.

Also, a number of folks pump 100 octane directly into their cars at Cosby. So, this is really illegal? The guy there only says it is illegal to directly pump the leaded 110.

All california gas has to be oxygenated, which racing fuel is not. If 100 Unleaded is pumped with the price uncluding federal state and local tax, it may be legal. In Nevada. Lets look at the pump this weekend.

David;

The place on Convoy is called JBA Racing Performance Center, 5155 Convoy 858 495 3395. I recall that they sell 100 unleaded in 5 gallon containers.

If it is illegal, I would be suprised given the size and scope of the Cosby operation.

The Cosby center is mostly used by trucks, but the service islands are just like those at most gas stations.

No signage (at least I didn't see any sign, not the first time for that) indicates it is illegal to
fill the tank of your car.

Interesting someone at Cosby said the 110 is illegal, since the guy there told me to do it since they could no longer fill my 5 gal. cans.

Like Tom says, nobody is watching...and it seems confusion reigns.

BTW I mix unleaded 100 with unleaded 91 bought elsewhere to get 93 octane which my car is tuned for.

I filled up my tank with the Sunoco 100 unleaded at Cosby down by the stadium just last weekend. I paid using my debit card and the guys at the station didn't mention anything concerning legality. They were more than happy to direct me to the pump and help me fill the car while asking me questions about it. There was also a SD Police car parked right at the end of Cosby's lot watching for people running the stop sign and/or speeding at the end of the Fairmount. It made me a little edgy seeing him there, but he didn't give me any hassles. I was a little nervous after my noisy 930 set off the alarm of another car parked on the street! :)
