REMINDER-For TT and DE, 5 OR 6-point harnesses-OUT OF DATE

Postby Steve Grosekemper on Tue Jan 15, 2008 12:58 pm

I just had a customer bring his car in for prep for the 2008 TT series and on his list was replace the out-dated harnesses.
So I thought I would remind all of you while it is fresh in my head.

Here is the rule as it reads for 2008:

A. For Time Trial and DE, five or six-point harnesses are required for all drivers
and passengers running in any Prepared class or higher and are strongly
recommended for all entrants.
Harnesses are required to be SFI or FIA approved for competition and mounted
in the manufacturer approved configuration. Any harness approved for club
racing is acceptable when installed according to the manufacturers instructions.
Harnesses should be installed with an approved competition seat. If harnesses
are installed and the seat is not an SFI or FIA approved competition seat, the
entrant needs to bring documentation to prove that the installation follows the
manufacturers instructions.
When properly installed, 5 or 6-point harnesses are allowed at Autocross
events, but they are not required. Cars that do not have 5 or 6-point harnesses
must have fully functional factory restraint systems.
Factory belts more than 20 years old, or visibly frayed or damaged at any age,
must be replaced with new belts.
Five and six-point restraint systems over five (5) years old, of questionable
condition, design, material, mounting, which are not installed according to the
manufacturers directions, or which are in any way unsafe, will be disallowed.

So the difference for this year is that belts 5-years or older are disallowed and last year you could pass with older belts "at the discretion of the tech chair". But too many people pushed this rule running sun rotted belts from 1985... and to fall in line with national rules.

For stock belts the rules change is:
Factory belts more than 20 years old, or visibly frayed or damaged at any age,
must be replaced with new belts.

So how do you tell?
Well there is a cloth tag where the belt attaches to the floor. If the tag is black you are most likely OK. If it is white, you need new belts. Also the chrome part that goes into the receiver has a hole in it. If it is round, you are way out of date. If it is square/rectangle, you should be good to go.

I hope this helps avoid some confusion now and at the tech line.

If you have additional questions on this subject you should contact the Z-8 rules chair at webmaster@zone8.org
