American Alexander Rossi to race in F1 this weekend!

Last minute driver change for Marussia, a back marker squad for sure, but let's hope for heavy rain to equalize the cars!

15:42 – Marussia has announced that Alexander Rossi will replace Max Chilton at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, a move that will mark his Formula 1 debut and end America's sizeable wait for a new driver.

Rossi, who signed as Marussia's reserve at the Hungarian Grand Prix after leaving key rivals Caterham, will partner regular driver Jules Bianchi while the Banbury squad resolves "contractual issues" with Chilton.

The last American driver to start a Formula 1 race was Scott Speed at the 2007 European Grand Prix.

"It goes without saying that I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to race in Formula 1 for the first time and I cannot thank the Marussia F1 Team enough for the faith they are demonstrating in me," explained Rossi.

"It's a very big moment for me and there's a lot to prepare in a short space of time, but I have felt ready for this for quite a while now. It is also exciting to be given this opportunity at such a fantastic and historical circuit.

"I can't wait to drive the MR03 from tomorrow and I hope to reward the team with a solid race weekend."

"Although it was not our intention to offer Alexander the possibility to race this season, in light of the circumstances we are pleased to be providing him with the opportunity to make his Grand Prix debut at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Franchorchamps," Marussia Team Principal John Booth added.

"Naturally we hope to resume normal service with respect to our established race driver line-up as soon as possible, but for now we wish Alexander well for the weekend and we look forward to seeing him in action."

Too bad the 'contractual issues' with Chilton were resolved before the final practice session and Rossi was sidelined after morning practice. It would have been nice to see him get the start. It's hard to tell what the heck is happening in that team. http://news.yahoo.com/motor-racing-chilton-return-dashes-rossis-debut-hopes-124228032--f1.html;_ylt=AwrSyCWO0fdTqUEAG7PQtDMD

That's a shame. I really wanted to see Rossi on track this weekend.
