The last PDS?

Saw this today and thought, "Swap the word Auto-cross or PDS for Tailgate" and you see the probable implications pretty clearly...

Not looking so good for our continued use of the lot at the Q for weekend auto-x and twice yearly PDSs.

Obviously, we've all known we were on some sort of borrowed time at the Q (if nothing else, at some point the pavement just won't support continued use), but it does seem we should start getting pretty serious about:

a) Doing what we can to protect what we have
b) Trying to ensure that any new plan includes designs conducive to continued auto enthusiast use of the facility, and
c) Plan for finding a new location(s) that can accommodate our club needs.

I'm guessing there are others who are already thinking along these lines, and maybe there are formal efforts underway that I just haven't heard about yet, but in any case, wanted to wave the red flag and offer to help any way I can.

It will probably take a while but probably our best option is if the Chargers leave for LA.
The Q will likely stay for the SDSU and although development will ensue it will be at a slower pace.
Of course up in the OC they are still working on El Toro going away

Our best option in planning for the future may be to follow the Roebling Road model- have the local car clubs (SD/OC chapters of PCA, BMWCCA, and SCCA) crowdfund the purchase a plot of land on the outskirts of the developed region (Ramona?). It can then be paved either in a number of configurable mini-road-course options or, drainage permitting, in its entirety. Add a protracted lean-to/shelter arrangement along one edge for shade and pits. Charge enough per event for upkeep and property taxes, and autox 52 weekends a year.

I'm entirely serious about this. Between here and OC there are a large number of individuals who are passionate about the SoCal autox culture, and coordinated properly, I suspect we would have no trouble raising the money.

Be a great coo for us auto enthusiast but might be a difficult task passing county permits and appeasing environmentalist.
There are some lightly used streets in Tijuana that I bet we could "borrow" once a month.

One benefit of locating it somewhere like Ramona would be the ability to bring economic leverage to bear on the local government- a hundred or so people coming through every weekend, buying gas, food, drinks afterward, etc is a big benefit to local businesses. Might help with the permitting situation?

This. And, the land would be too expensive, and they would probably not allow that use. Even in the rural Ramona area. Fires will be listed as a concern. Lack of good traffic access will be another. Noise will be brought up. It would not take too many locals to gum up that idea, and you know there will be a few. Unfortunately.

I bet if you could get it done, it would take 5 to 8 years, and it would costs millions.

and if the proposed autoX'ers didnt show in the numbers projected to pay for it........ It is not really feasible unless you have a few deep pockets that were ready to carry the process for years regardless of costs and time. At that point it would really be a private track.

Every time this has been thoroughly researched in the past, the environmental and noise issues killed the program and it was determined an Indian Reservation is the only hope. Maybe things have changed, but the last 2-3 attempts ended similarly.

NOLF IB would be a very good spot, not too far away, and they dont fly aircraft from there anymore I think. Last time I had a project there that is what navy peeps said. Only for emergencies where they cant make it to north Island.

but it is an active navy base and probably they would not allow autoX there. maybe something to look into though. We seem to have a good relationship with the Navy?

I get the feeling mixed use Motorsports isn't even on anyone's radar... How about organizing a letter signed by the Presidents of all the local clubs that regularly use the facility to tell them the number of annual users and the lack of akternative locations? There are alternatives for skateboarders... But not for street racers.
