SA 2015 Helmets

Postby Dave Diamond on Fri Oct 30, 2015 3:03 pm

I was about to order an SA 2015 helmet online, then saw that it won't ship until mid-January. When is the first TT event next year, and is there a way to get an extra month as a grace period on my SA 2005? Seems like a waste to buy a 2010 when the 2015's are almost here.

Per 2015 Zone 8 Rules, section XIII, paragraph C, "Expiring helmets shall be acceptable until June 30 of the year after the new standard."

So yes, 6 months grace period.

Another tactic that some use is to buy a new (closeout 2010) helmet now at about 1/2 price of a 2015. Repeat this with the next gen closeout and you get an April-fresh new helmet every 5 years for about the same $$ total invested.

For those of you helmet hunting, there is unfortunately one less place in SD to buy them. C2 Motorsports is no more. I spoke with Ron there last week about buying the new helmets for PCA-SDR and they have ceased operations.

Yes, sad but true.

On the other hand, I talked with Mike at JBA Speed Shop about C2's demise. He said he could get a lot of the stuff we need (helmets, gloves, etc.) with a little lead time. They're located on Kearny Villa Road near the 163 & Clairemont Mesa Blvd.

Otherwise .... order off the web?

JBA has also purchased C2's tire equipment and will be doing race tire mounting and balancing as well as performance alignments. For the street / track driver, they will be offering pre and post track alignments for those who are trying to run race tires on the weekends while still driving on the street during the week.

JBA isn't quite spun up on helmets, etc.
Summit Racing had great prices on Zamp, Gforce open-face if you go with a SA2010 for the next 5 years. But be careful, as some of their "good deals" are SA2005, even if they say SA2010 in the descriptions (Bell sport mag). SA2005 is a no go for PCA-SDR/Zone8 rules.

Here's a list of places I found on the web. YMMV...a lot.

Dave Malmburg pointed me to some sites that might have M rated helmets if you want to go that route.

Thanks for all the info. Is there anyplace locally where you can actually try on shoes, suits, gloves, etc and buy them in-person? I hate buying stuff online and then having to send it back if it doesn't fit.

That would have been C2.... The problem with stocking safety gear is that it's all dated, most items good for 5 - 10 years. There is a real limit on what a small store can stock. At C2 I could try several suits or helmets of different sizes and makes, even if I still had to order the particular size and model that I wanted. Steve and Ron's knowledge of race equipment fit was invaluable - I was happy with everything Bret and I bought from them. I think that our best recourse for a local dealer may be JBA. Jay is a serious road racer, driving older Mustangs, etc., and he does understand road racing as well as his traditional drag racing. If there is enough interest, I know that he is considering stocking at least some items - helmets, maybe suits, etc. If you're interested, give Jay a call or stop by and let him know.

I just bought a bunch of new helmets for the club and found the following:
From www.summitracing.com I got these prices on SA2010 open faced helmets:
Zamp JA-2 SA2010 $108.50
Gforce Pro Phenom SA2010 $161.99
If you are the sweaty type, you might want to change out helmets every 5 years, so this would work for you. However, stocks are getting low on SA2010 helmets so move fast.

The SA2015s are a little more than prior full priced SA2010s. Bell open faced sport mag was $250, now $280. Lower end brands (open faced) were about $150, now $180. You can extrapolate from there than the full faced & other helmets may be a bit more as well.

I just got the full face delivered and it looks good and fits well at first trial.

I bought a close out SA2010 full-face Bell Star Classic from Wine Country Motorsports... Sure I could have paid less, but it matches the 70RSR vibe!

http://winecountrymotorsports.com/bell/ ... -1149.html

But there don't seem to be any markings/stickers indicating the SA rating... What do we need to provide to pass tech?

Thanks,
