I am interested in either a used 964 (am looking at a 1992 - 43k miles, tip, OBC, etc. all records, clean carfax) but am being advised that the 993 is less expensive to maintain and that I should consider a 1995 to 1998 type 993 instead. The costs for the car would be a bit more (the '92 is priced in the mid $30's). Appreciate any comments or people's experiences with either model.

I am an ex-Boxster owner and had a great experience with my '99 - five yrs - 60k miles with little or no maintenance other than routine maintenance and the gas cap recall.

I can't understand why anyone would want a 964 or 993 tiptronic. Zzzz. It doesn't sound like you'll be racing your car, so I guess I'd recommend the 993. Many of the parts for the 964 are unique to that model and are bit more pricey. However, if you were going to race, I'd suggest the 964, since it starts in a lower class. Easier to make it very competitive. Why don't you just get another, newer used Boxster. New technology, better balance, for the same price.

There is no right answer, both have strengths and weaknesses. What are you looking for in a car? Why did you sell your Boxster?Drive both and see what fits your likes and budget best. Also, drive a 996, as they are faster, smoother, quieter and seem to work with the tiptronic better for just a little more money....

If you end up with a 964 or 993, be sure to have a pre-purchase inspection done by a VERY knowledgable PORSCHE specialist. A couple 'little' problems on those cars can easily cost $5k or more to fix.
