Weekend Accident

Postby Old Guy on Tue Mar 29, 2016 9:35 am

Have been out of touch for much of the last few months. Now back to Oceanside. Not happy to see the news re the Sunday accident involving a 356, serious injuries, and an (alleged) impaired driver in the other vehicle. Does anyone know if our chapter members were involved? Whether assistance is needed? I will say that as much as I enjoy back country drives, a negative always in the back of my mind is the possibility of just this sort of senseless encounter, waiting just around the next bend in the road.

Hope the driver (and I assume passenger) recover completely. The news sure made it sound bad.

It had just gone through a full restoration. Saw the car Saturday morning and got a few photos of it. It was beautiful! Hope they recover...so very sad.

There is a long thread at Ferrarichat concerning this accident. It appears the Speedster owner was very well known in the Ferrari world.

It's encouraging to know that mutual interests worldwide - especially among people that have never met in person - so directly lead to moral support, prayers and best wishes. Positive vibes matter. Having watched the videos and thought about the scene of the accident, it really and truly does seem senseless. We often hear sayings like: "life's not fair," "no good deed goes unpunished," or "wrong place at the wrong time." Seeing them all rolled into one, tragic event is very upsetting: especially when the cause seems not to be Fate, but rather the misdeeds of a problematic driver.

An update on the accident:

The summary as of today is that Jon is still in the ICU, but unfortunately Amanda didn't survive her injuries (driver and passenger of the Porsche 356 that was hit).

For those interested in helping out, there are now two GoFundMe accounts set up. One to help with Jon's medical expenses, and one to support Amanda's young children:

Jon

Amanda

More details about the whole incident and the fundraising efforts are at the FerrariChat forum link that Tom posted earlier:

Lots of interesting posts on the Ferrari gang's thread; only takes a few minutes to skim through them. There is a link to a video of the 356 owner driving and explaining his Speedster. Worth a look. But then as one fellow mentioned: it can make you feel both sad and angry at the same time.

For me it is extremely difficult to balance emotions with practicality. Emotions? What the heck did this couple do to deserve getting taken out by an impaired driver?? She's gone. Sons motherless. He'll be in the hospital for months. Not logical. Not reasonable. Not fair!!

But then emotions aside, practical issues come to mind. Are you fully covered for uninsured drivers? How about collector car market value?? Two weeks ago my neighbor's wife got clobbered in her Cayenne GTS in a parking lot. Guy tried to leave; she stood in front of his car, taking i-Phone pictures. Police were too busy to do anything of substance. The neighbors paid to fix it themselves. So we're on our own? I hope to heck that the Speedster was fully insured to market value. If you think you'll save a few hundred or thousand bucks by skipping collector car insurance because after all, "I'll never lose control or hit anyone." Think again!! Every time I venture out in our '85 Carrera I get the willys. Sitting at a red light? Just look in the rear view mirror and see a 30-something driver looking down, texting. December I was sitting still at a red light, heard some tire noise, looked in the rear view mirror and saw a driver trying to swerve left. Bam. My car was totaled (Mercedes sedan in front of me got its rear end rearranged as well), but fortunately it was an Enterprise rental. To repeat: just "sitting still" and as the saying goes: minding my own business. PS: Heaven of Heavens...the driver had both a valid license and paid up State Farm insurance. (So just which of my nine lives did that event use up?)

To conclude I have only one suggestion to make: have the practical side of driving your Porsche (or which ever) machine fully organized. It will be one less thing to worry about when and if the emotional crises associated with an accident event rear their ugly heads. Fingers crossed it never will. But honestly, if this totally innocent couple can get clobbered while driving their classic Speedster - thru no fault of their own in broad daylight and on a wide boulevard - are any of us really and truly safe??

There was an updated article published in the Union Tribune a couple of days ago. It gives a good summary of everything so far:

Howdy. I don't know who this Ferrari "Robb" guy is but if ever something should happen to me or one of my loved ones, I hope a "Robb" person will step in and help. You should go to the Ferrari folks forum and see what is going on. Not much good news for the victims, but lots of good vibes for the community stepping up to help all of the "survivors" - defined as the 356 owner himself and the kids of his passenger. To HELP. What does that mean?? Yeah, a bit of $$ here and there, but mostly emotional. HELP. Help. Prayers don't pay $ bills, but they do HELP with things that go towards our mental and physical well-being. God Bless you, Robb.

PS: Last I heard (local paper article) the pot-head driver was being held on $3 million dollars bond, and of course had pleaded "not guilty."

Sorry in advance for dwelling on the negative. That said, attending C&C this Saturday and seeing the gorgeous (98+ point, per the owner) pale blue Speedster brought to mind this string and my original post. If you go to the link in the string to the Ferrari group's forum you can get an update. We know that Ms. Amanda didn't survive. As for the Speedster owner, John - well...recovery will be a long process. Minding their own business on a wide city street; slammed by a DUI driver. (Last I read in the paper, the DUI driver was under charges and being held on $3 million bail.) Now my mind is twisted. Yeah, for several years I drove a '66 Beetle with NO seatbelts. Only because the USAF airbase I worked at first mandated lap belts, and then shoulder belts, did I add them. But once I had them, I realized I couldn't drive without them. So back to our chapter mates with classic wheels. Our oldest Porsche has proper shoulder belts, albeit over 30 years old. Otherwise, the older and more classic our Porsches are, the more we're at risk when driving them. It won't be us that does something stupid. It will be one of those - you see them everywhere - numbskull, texting, bald tires, paying-no-attention drivers that surround us every time we venture out of our garages. What a downer to even think about!!
