Buyer beware!

Interesting call I just had with Porsche of San Diego parts dept

I need a few little hardware items and rather than order online and have to pay $15+ shipping on $10 of parts I called the parts dept at Porsche of San Diego

I was quoted pricing on 1 part that was 50% over list and 76% over list on another
For reference, Hoen quoted list.

I asked the parts guy why they charge more than retail and he said that just what they do.
I then mentioned I am a PCA member and that we do talk among ourselves and that overcharging for parts is a good way not to get business. He then said "Oh, PCA members get 10% off of retail, not our regular price" and then quoted me actual pricing that was in fact 10% off ofretail. :banghead:

They are still a little higher then even their own online website, but at least there is no shipping charge

That is a really crappy policy to overcharge for parts. I wounder how many of our members have been gouged on parts cost because they either didn't know about the policy or forgot to tell them they were a PCA member. I bet this is the same if you have service done that includes parts

Jay, I'm not sure what happened, but I'd be willing to bet the parts manager wants you to have a great experience at the dealership, especially since you're a club member. Can I suggest talking to that person? There might simply be some more training that needs to happen, in which case everyone will benefit

What happened is very simple.

Price gouging!

Sure, when I did mention PCA, they did quote the proper dealer price and gave 10% off that list price, The issue is the pricing they are quoting as normal, significantly higher than list.

What is even worse, you can order parts off their website (www.porschesandiegoparts.com) and get a bigger discount, sometimes as much as 30% off list, you just need to pay shipping. Their website pricing is in line with other dealers online pricing.

I probably will give the parts manager a call, but I doubt they will be changing their policy

I would be willing to wager that it is a high percentage.
Like all things in life; Caveat Emptor.

There is a solution that I utilize.

Not a PCASDR Board Sanctioned one.....................................

I give nearly all (they do not stock parts for a 69 'Cuda) of my parts acquisition business to Tom and Bev Gould @ TCs Garage in Vista
Give them a call

I am very familiar with this issue as I have restored a few old 911's over the years. Porsche SD has flat out missed out on tens of thousands of dollars of my business because of their pricing practices on vintage parts. I buy original parts from Sunset Porsche in Oregon or Stoddard in Ohio. Both have representatives that understand air-cooled 911's and have great customer service. Since Sunset is in Oregon they don't charge sales tax. Wish I could enjoy the convienience and savings on shipping from shopping local but the difference isn't even close.
