The End of AX at the Q

Postby ChuckS on Wed May 24, 2017 11:34 am

I understand that the car clubs were told that the end of use of the Q lots for car club activity would be the end of 2018.

Who has the details?

Hey Chuck,

That is what Mark Curran said at the SOW drivers meeting last Saturday morning. :(

I haven't spoken with Mark C, yet, but Aztec Football and the Holiday Bowl contracts end in 2018, and there's a large ($12M) budgetary hole to fill without the Chargers paying for using the stadium. Quotes from the Mayor's office below...

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/n ... /99848210/
After the Chargers then decided to leave for Los Angeles, the city of San Diego has been considering the fate of the Chargers’ old home: 50-year-old Qualcomm Stadium, which is owned by the city and has cost around $12 million per year for the city to maintain. San Diego State’s football team and the college football Holiday Bowl have leases to use the stadium through 2018.

“Given the high cost to the city’s operating budget, the city is undergoing review of the financial feasibility of continuing stadium operations beyond that point,” said Craig Gustafson, spokesman for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

And a later quote, with a more defined outcome for the Q...
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/n ... 101773060/
"We have been very clear that the City cannot afford to keep Qualcomm Stadium open past 2018 and the Padres have clearly stated that the Aztecs can only play at Petco Park for one year after that," Matt Awbrey, a spokesman for Faulconer, said in an email to The Associated Press."

SOOOOOOO.........
Anyone know of a large parking lot, small airport, old landing strip, proving ground, shipyard, military site....anything? If you have some good ideas or connections to such locations, please share them with Mark C. & Julieann B. R. (who are heading up our initial search efforts) or any of us on the Board. This Club has long been driven (pun intended) by the AX program (along with the PDS), so we need to find a way to keep it going!!!

This has been floated before, but try NOLF Imperial Beach (1200 acre runway in the middle of marsh). When I used to fly out the NASNI flying club, we'd transit over OLF IB as it was CLOSED ON WEEKENDS (no flight ops). I think still. It's part of Naval Base Coronado, so the CO would have to be schmoozed :beerchug: . NBC hosts the vintage races every year, so the command are fans?
