GGR Buttonwillow Club Race

Postby Greg Phillips on Thu Jun 01, 2017 8:22 am

Had my second weekend of racing and a fun time at Buttonwillow and a better venue for Spec944 than Fontana.

Here are some highlights from the back of the pack from second race:

Sounds fun. Greg, I'll watch your videos if you promise to never call our class "Spec 944" again. Spec 944 is an all-but-dead SCCA class. We are 944 Spec in NASA, PCA, POC. Different name, philosophy, rules.

OK, maybe I should just simplify to SP1 :surr:
It is a little confusing with 944 Cup also in the mix. :roflmao:

Here is video from the last sprint race from Buttonwillow

When I was pushing to get PCA club racing to adopt the 944 Spec class, 944 Cup was already going on in the east part of the US. Instead of only accepting 944 Spec and funneling all NA 944's to one class, PCA also included the other two more expensive 944 Cup classes, which thinned starting grids of possible 944 Spec class cars.
Bottom line is that I was trying hard to grow 944 Spec, while they wanted more Porsches of any kind on the starting grid.
Kinda like inviting a beautiful, fun girl to your party......and she shows up with her two ugly step sisters.
The philosophy of 944 Spec is simple. Cheap, Equal Porsches. You can't outspend me - you have to out drive me. 944 Cup allows way more $$ mods and uses a power to weight ratio to try to equalize cars. 944 Spec cars all scale the same and have a horse power cap. We guard the rule set fanatically so it doesn't go the way of the $30,000 front running Miata.
You can imagine my horror at being asked to display a 944 Cup decal across the top of my windshield in order to run the car at Cal Fest of Speed.
