Does anybody know of any reputable tuners out here? I know of a couple in L.A. but it would be great if we had some down here in San Diego

What are you trying to do. Chipping a 991 Turbo S is a lot different than making a 78 911 into a track car.

Im thinking of chipping my 97 986. Ive read that the early 986's had a nonprogrammable ecu. But i couldnt find info so i was gonna try and speak with a tuner about it.

The guys at HG Motorsports ( https://www.hgperformance.co ) in Sorrento Valley do Porsche tuning and sound quite knowledgeable as I recently chatted back and forth with them about tuning my 996 J-class race car. I haven't decided to do it yet so I can't report any more than that, but at least that's a possible option for you.

Blackforest and Mirage are the best Porsche places around here, but chipping a 97 Boxster is a questionable proposition. Not really much to be gained, so not sure anyone would want to do it for you.

Reflashing an early Boxster will only make your wallet lighter.
The only time this is an improvement is when other mods have been made and the car is running too lean.
The real power for a 986 is in the air box.
I have done 2.5L, 2.7L early and late cars and a 3.2L and all were noticeable improvements.
(power and sound)
But this is an involved and fairly costly upgrade.

What do you mean by "air box"? I have read about people upgrading to the 987 air box since it has a greater surface area

Yes, 987 air box is what I mean.
It lets the car breathe. The stock 986 box is super restrictive.

Steve is dead-on. The 987 air filter is over 100 percent larger in surface area. It truly is the limiting factor on for the intake on the 986. I have done this upgrade on cars and dyno tuned the car to see some significant increases. Depending on your year, you can add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to push more fuel to go along with the airbox upgrade. An interesting fact, the "550" spyder addition of the 986 had an early addition of the 987 airbox along with a different fuel map to give that variant the larger HP / TQ numbers.

I'll pile-on and suggest Steve G and Adam are the resident 986 go fast guys in SDR. They practice what they preach and it is reflected in their time sheets at AX and TT. If you really want to transform your 2.5L Boxster, yoke their strengths. Nobody drives them faster.
