Hi, apex carvers!

Here are some pics of todays AX at Cal State San Marcos hosted by SCCA. Some of our AXers participated. This is SCCA's first trial AX there, and we are looking at this venue as an alternative to SDCCU Stadium (The Q). I expect it to be further discussed at the upcoming board meeting.

Ehhh... Tom T. says he got an error message when he tried to view these pics. This is the first time I've tried to post pics to Google Photos and then provide the link. I am able to see the pics when I click the link above, but I think I neglected to click "share" so that anyone with the link can view them. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I hope I have resolved the issue. Please let me know if you are not able to view the pics from the link now.

Thanks, Tom!

Sara

Sara,
Still can't see them.

Two key things to sharing Google photos, or any other such link:
1. enable sharing (now you've done this)
2. post the shareable link, DO NOT copy the link from the top of your browser (The original browser link is personalized to you and your browser knows who you are, so of course you can see your own photos when you look at that link).

In photos.google.com, click the Share button in upper right corner, then in the popup click "get link", then copy that link for others to use. You can go back and edit your original post with the proper link once you have this. You can always test links like this by trying the link in a new Private/Incognito browser window to see if you can see it there, since that window doesn't have your Google "identity" so its like any one of us random folks clicking the link.

... and, photos aside, what did folks think of the venue?

Thanks loads, Rampy! How about this link:

Hopefully this will be the winning ticket!

Charles: Here are some thoughts from Terry Barnum, and I think I can safely say that most or all of us out in attendance concur with Terry:

Pros:
- Excellent pavement. I was told that CSUSM repaves every 2 years.
- Deluxe bathrooms
- Classroom for meetings available
- Could work as a PDS venue
- Close to us North County folks
- Could eek out a slightly larger/longer track than SCCA did

Cons:
- Small/Short. When I left top times were ~25-26 seconds.
- No shade
- Dry campus--no alcohol on-site after events
- Did I mention small?

Allow me to add:

Easy highway access.
The classrooms would be great for chalk talk if we were to hold a PDS at CSSM.
The smaller course levels the playing field, so to speak, because we can't build up as much speed as at the Q. I heard Tom Gould mention that he thought it might be a good teaching venue.
Although we would not be allowed to quaff a few celebratory brews during awards ceremonies, there are some nearby new great pubs (e.g., Urge Gastropub) and lots of other restaurants where we could gather for dinner and brewskies after the event, unlike the Q where there's not much in the immediate vicinity.
This venue is more cost effective.
There is a Costco an easy 3 miles away and lots of other nearby stores closer, should we need any supplies.

Yes, that URL takes me to a viewable page of photos on Google now, Sara.

I took the liberty of editing your original post on this thread to include the corrected, share-able URL (as Keith suggested), Sara, so that people do not have to scroll down in the discussion to find the corrected link.

That is a very short course by any standard.

We have been spoiled by the lot at the Q. Hope we can hold on to it for longer than we expected.

FYI, a lot of the autocross world deals with small lots by having the courses loop back on themselves multiple times. It's obviously not ideal, and it generally restricts you to having no more than two cars on course at a time, depending on how far you can separate the start from the finish. But it can still be fun.

Here's one video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGh9s50GupE

I've autocrossed on that lot, back in 2003 when I started AX. If you avoid crossovers entirely, you can probably get a 30 second course, but it will be ridiculously tight and slow. In the video, you can see that they've stretched the course out to about 45 seconds without getting too tight or slow, but it does require what are essentially three laps of the lot.

Here's that lot in Google Maps. It's tiny, but I actually enjoyed autocrossing there: https://goo.gl/maps/8R2tMVW6czC2

On the plus side, you can probably get by with only 5 or 6 corner workers covering the entire course! :)

And yes, we're very fortunate to have the lot that we have now.
