AX After June?

Postby Tom Helvey on Thu Jan 30, 2020 7:12 pm

Are there any alternative locations for SDCCU?
How about the MCAS Miramar tarmac? Maybe give military deeply discounted AX and PDS registrations?
Storm Stadium is quite a hike from here.
PCASDR AX events are really great, great people, fun courses, not to mention really close.
I'm going to miss them if they have to go, but if they have to move, just tell me where and I'll be there.

Thanks!

Nothing local. Closest alternatives are Fontana, Lake Elsinore (now used by SCCA San Diego), and El Toro (used by PCA OCR).

MCAS Miramar doesn't really have space. Even if they were amenable to letting us in (which they're not, see the east gate traffic jams during the recent Iran dustup?), I'm afraid we don't share the same value system. Free AX for service members isn't nearly enough of a carrot to get over the work of hosting us on a Saturday. We're asking them to do extra work (clearing folks for base entry) on a day that most of the base is taking a day off.

We face the same problem at other military bases, e.g Coronado or NOLF, which is really quiet on weekends. Our programs don't provide enough value for the COs to take on the extra work, extra risk.

Military tarmac is, for the forseeable future, not in our future.

Yes, we're possibly witnessing the end of an era. We've been racing in Jack Murphy Stadium for some 40 years!

Our best hope for local action is probably the Otay EVOC, but that's slow going (in more ways than one).

The P.O.C. brought in the the AX group divested from OCR PCA, No more performance driving @ OCR PCA, No instructor capability anymore within the club to support the safety requirements. Last POC events for El Toro are real close due to development of OC Great Park.
I remember when both clubs had 100+ cars @ each AX event.

Is the expectation that the June event will be the last for the 2020 AX points championship? I already missed the January event due to work obligations, and I believe you need minimum of 6 races to qualify.

I'm driving the SCCA event this weekend at Lake Elsinore.
If anyone is interested in pursuing that route, I can report back. I've heard the parking lot is pristine.
It might be hard to get a mile out of it, it's also an hour away.
I'll make some videos.

Here is a video of my fast lap today, WT is still 5 seconds ahead of me :)
https://youtu.be/y7kXf0n8GG0
SCCA runs in the south lot across the street from the stadium.
The course was about 1/2 mile long.
Sorry about the glare, I drove in the last session.

Thanks for sharing the video! tarmac looks to be in very nice condition. Given that there are homes directly adjacent to the track, I assume the noise levels were closely monitored?

93 dB limit, call in anything over 91.
I did sound for my work assignment on Sunday. There's always that one guy. :)

POC AX (the former PCAOCR group) are still running at El Toro.
CalClub (SCCA OC/LA region) run at Fontana each month. Practice on Sats and Competition on Sun. It is across from the Kart track.

Who would have thought that El Toro would outlast Jack Murphy ( Qualcomm, SDCCU) Stadium? :surr:

The OC POC event is barely a shadow of its former self.
I went up in November or December and left early.
It's basically an out n back track on a single taxi way.

Jack Murphy will certainly be missed for it's topography which made it interesting.

They haven't yet... this might be their last year too, we might go out together. I know we don't have a definite end date yet. Not sure about them.
