Seems like a really high number of DNR's (25 out of ~70); what's up with that?

That was almost as fast as your times on the track. Thanks Kary.

Was Evan Beal really on standard street tires? That time is pretty impressive even for a GT3 on dot 200+ street tires.

Thanks Jad!

Yes Evan was running on street tires. That GT3 is quite a car. I spent another weekend instructing in the yellow GT3 and the more I ride in them the more I realize that car is probably the most superior street/track car out of the box that Porsche has ever made (except for the the GT3 RS that they did not import here!) Quite a car and capable of much faster times than we have seen so far. I think it will take the owners of these some years to learn them well enough to get lower times out of them.

Wow, and I thought I was doing well on Toyo RA1's. Street tires must be really exciting in several places on that track

Never been in a GT3, but it sounds like I need to get a ride sometime ...

I was just recently corrected about Evan's car. I believe he was running MPSC's. Still a good time but makes more sense with those tires and that time.

His times are too good to waste on a calm and rational thread like this currently is. I will save that for a good trash talkin thread and throw it out when it has real punch 8)

I noticed the conversation about tires above and had a couple questions I was hoping someone can help me with. Being new to all this I don't understand the rules and after reading them it is still not clear to me what adds points to your car regarding tires.

My question is does putting a tire with a treadwear rating below 100 on my car (GT3) just add a couple points or does it automatically bump me into the next class?

People have told me conflicting answers and I noticed on the results above that I am in the same class with Evan who is running MPSC's. I am told they are much better for the track than my PS2's which leads me to my second question.

On a track like Buttonwillow does anyone have any idea of how much improvement someone could expect in lap times going from PS2's to MPSC's?

Having just purchased new tires last week I am not going to change anything now, I just want to be able to make a good decision next time around. Any other tips or advice about tires is greatly appreciated!

John, the basic rules are this as I recall:

Look on the chart for tire width based upon your class. You are in P so you get the following depending upon tire size:

290-315 is 2 points
over 315 is 4 points
Anything under 290 is no points

Tire compounds:
R or C compounds which are 101 to 200 in treadwear is 1 point
50 to 100 is 2 points
0 to 49 is 4 points

Racing slicks automatically put you in I (Improved or higher)
Below 100 I believe automatically puts you is S (Stock or higher)

Hope that helps!

John:

Congratulations for doing well!

The tires mentioned are two (2) points, but also force you out
of the SS class. See the rules linked below, especially sections
II-A (SS class), and III-C (points for tires) for details.

http://www.pca.org/zone8/rules/DrivingB ... 5Final.htm

The softer, purpose-built tires require a car with fairly stiff
suspension, which the GT3 has. They also are less forgiving
if you are un-smooth. Just a rough guess, but they would
likely shave about 3-4 seconds off your times at BWRP like
we ran it, all else being equal.

Paul.

For the first question, to run in Street Stock class PSS, you have to have tires with treadwear <140, along with several other restrictions below. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cups would move you into a stock class and cost 4 points if <50 treadwear or 2 points if >50 and <100.
As to the second question, there are many variables, but on a long technical track like BW 4-6 seconds would not be an unreasonable possiblity. Although there were people on street rubber with very good times like Doug Kott who turned a 138.89 in his 944S2 on his street tires for second in JP!

Greg
