Anyone have a ballpark idea how much it costs to ship a car across the country? (In this case from South Carolina to San Diego)

Chris, you might try calling intercity lines for a quote.

There are very few companies who actually ship. There are tons who broker the shipping. The cheapest is by using trains and going terminal to terminal, which entails a towing cost on both ends. Ask the company if they use trains or trucks. San Diego has the terminal near downtown. They will gather cars over several days or weeks then load them all up and take them at once. It's the same for trucks. They don't want to go across country unless they have a full load. The trucking companies will offer door to door service at added cost. Everybody will try to stick you with a fuel surcharge. Get insurance. Ask if the car will be changing trucks. Just like flying, a non-stop is best. Everytime the car is moved from this truck to that, there's the chance of damage, especially a low race car.
MAKE SURE YOU READ THE FEEDBACK ABOUT THE COMPANIES ON THE WEB. That will also help you to ask the right questions. When I researched this last year, the cost was between $800-$1200.
Good luck.

Thanks Guys,
Intercity looks like the best (and most expensive) at around $1500.

Does this mean that there is a GT3 in your future?

Chris-
I've been out of town so I'm coming late to this discussion, but I would suggest getting a quote from Frank Beck at Competition Transport in AZ. He did a great job for me on coast-to-coast, enclosed, door-to-door delivery of a non-running race car with spares for $1200 last Dec.

TT

That's an excellent price. Let's see how the cost of gas affects the price.......

Two years ago, Intercity moved THREE cars for me (from DC back to SDiego), for a grand total of 3800. On-time, on budget, and tremendous service!

FYI
Intercity gave me a quote today of $1710 (enclosed, door to door) plus a "$120 fuel surcharge" = $1830

Thanks Tom I'll talk to Competition Transport for another bid.

Yes the car is a GT3. :P

Chris, not sure three or four hundred dollars matters that much if you are buying a GT3, does it ?

Well, all I can say is the car definitely won't be legal in 944 spec. Some guys will try anything to win........

Chris, before you ship a car across country, you may want to give Mr. Huck a call. When I was there last week he had just got in one with about 6k miles. It's black, but you seem to like like black.
