Tire Repair

Anybody know of a good shop that will repair my rear 19" 295/30ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. I have 2 screws in it that close to each other. I took it to Discount and they won't patch it becasue the holes are to close together and they are afraid it might split. I still have about 50% tread and don't feel like replacing it. If I do, I will have to get a new set of rear tires.

You're going to have to replace those rear tires. You would be risking way more than some tires by driving with a repaired tire. Cost of tires $700.00 for two. Cost of new car and injuries to yourself and others, $$$$$$$$$$. I would be surprised if any reputable tire shop would repair that tire.

I agree that a new set of rears is in order, but unfortunately those are closer to $1k a pair. Ask me how I know...

I have a flat now, so I have to fix. I am going to call a couple of porsche salvage shops and see if I can get a PS2 for the rear with about 50% tread left.

If I get nowhere, I was thinking of going with a set of Bridgestone Potenza N rated. They run around $290 each at Tire Rack. The front will still have PS2s because there is still around 60% left. I am hoping that I can get the maximum life out of the tires and get a full set for both front and rear.... That will cost me around $1,900 for a full set. Haven't decide if I would go with PZeros or PS2s again.

I just got a full set of 19" PS2's for my Boxster from Discount tire for $1400. I went to the one in Rancho San Diego. Rich is the manager and he took good care of me. I think the 295's will be a little more than my 265's, but they shouldn't be $1000 for the two rears.

Hey Mark tire time is wonderfull if you have a Boxster. That 1k figure is pretty accurate. I just replaced my rear tires 305-30-ZR19 at the wonderfull price of $1200 out the door. If ya wanna play ya gotta pay. Tire price alone will teach one not to scrub tires. Ralph

$1200 Ouch!! Another reason to love my Boxster. The bottom line is still that new tires cost less than an accident caused by a blowout due to a repaired or compromised tire. I understand these cars are quite expensive to fix when they hit immovable objects

Depending on your usage, I have found there are options on tires that are better for for less money that the Michelins or especially the Pzero which I have found to be a very bad tire.

I would suggest asking around what other tires people use or post your usage (ax, tt, street) and desires (handling, noise, ride, gas mileage, cost) to solicite options that are much better values. Each tire excels at a couple of the above, but no tire is best at everything, though some are bad at everything

Also - go to Tire Rack (http://www.TireRack.com) and look at comments and ratings there. I have found the info there to be quite good. You may find that there are alternative tires that handle as well or better and that are a lot less expensive.
You can select your current Michelins and then look at similar tires for comparisons.

Even on the Boxster, the Michelins are about the most expensive tires, and I certainly think the Yokohama ADVAN NEOVAs are a better tire (if they make them in your size). They certainly "out-stuck" the Michelin-equipped Boxsters at Parade.

I ended up ordering a set of Bridgestone Potenza for the rear. The "rub" is that you have to use N rated tires or Porsche can void you if you are still under warranty. There aren't many options out there currently. The car falls out next October, which should be time for a new set of 4. Then I should hopefully have more options and x my fingers...prices may go down.

Unfortunately, for the specific size we are talking about (295/30ZR19), there are not a lot of choices in street tires.

Other:
Yokohama ADVAN Sport

My car came with the Continentals, which were quiet, but they did not grip all that well and lasted only 8k miles (plus one PDS and one AX).

I replaced them with the Michelins, which are noisier, but grip quite well and lasted 16k miles (plus one PDS and two AX).

I am now on my second set of Michelins. I would have liked to try the Yokohamas, but not while the car is still under warranty.
