wheels and tire sizes for 90 C2

Postby rhoadesco on Wed Mar 22, 2006 3:47 pm

This would seem to be a common question but I didn't see it addressed specifically on the forums I searched. I have a standard 1990 C2 with 6" front rims and 8" rear, both evidently have 52mm offset as indicated by the mark on the rims.

First question, keeping the same rims I think I should be able to move up tire sizes from 205/50 to 225/45 on the front and from 225/50 to 245/45 on the rear. I show this lowering the front of the car not quite an inch while the rear is barely lowered -- which is good because I think it looks low in the rear with the stock profile. The new sizes would be about .8 inches wider than stock, would they fit?

Second question, if I was to get new rims do I need to use the same offset which would then push the excess rim width farther outward or can I go with a little additional offset without rubbing anything and then maybe not put as much rubber outside the fenderwell?

Anybody have experience with this?

Thanks,
-DR

Your wheel sizes are correct for that car. The car should have 205/55-16's up front not 205/50's. That is the biggest tire you can put up there. The rears will take a 245/45 but it is not advised as you will get even more understeer than you have now.

If you want bigger and cooler put on a set of 993 wheels (Cup 2) or 964 wheels (Cup 1)

7x17 (55ET) and 9x17 (55ET)
Then put on some sticky 225's up front and 255 in the back.

Cup 1's are my preference (RSA wheels) and make the car look about 10 years newer.
