928s exhaust

Postby Red928s on Mon May 15, 2006 12:46 am

hello everybody, so i have an 86 928s and just today i noticed a sharp rattle when i started the engine or reved it some. I checked under the car and it seems to come from the middle/rear not by the headers or engine so I suspect that the cat is old and toasted and im hearing the little bits bouncing around. Any ideas? I've been thinking about an new exhaust anyways so if anybody has suggestions as to that it would be much appreciated. thanks!

Check your exhaust mounts first. Sometimes, the bolts will come loose connecting the flanges. You should also have a look at the clamps connecting your catalytic convertors to your intermediate mufflers. Seems like it's hardware related if it's a slight rattle. When cats fail, sometimes the material will come out the exhaust system. Any signs of 'soot' like material?

I have heard rattles in a catalytic converter when it has failed before so if everything is tight that is probably it. I had to replace the one on my 944S last week to pass smog. Richards Performance Muffler charged me less than $200 installed out the door!!! I thought it would cost twice that. They are in Vista 760-758-7600 and can do a whole new system if you like, or get you back on the road with just the cat if that's what you need. good luck
