PCA SDR

To all that are 944 Turbo experts. I purchased a 1986 944 turbo cheap, the guy said that it had a new motor in it. Come to find out he had installed and 1989 Turbo S motor. I do know that the DME was different for that motor. Should he have changed the DME, or will the DME from the 1986 work?

Any help would be appreciated.

The 86 and the 89 Turbo S have the same motor I believe, the difference was in accessories like the turbo charger. There may be 1 or 2 sensors that changed, but you need more of an expert than me for that. Does the car run? If so, the DME works. If only the motor was changed, I would think the old DME would be correct and the 89 would cause problems.

Well, the car runs, but badly @ the moment. First issue is that I believe that the Turbo is blown. Puking oil into the exhaust like crazy. I also think that the vacuum lines are another issue. Just trying to clarify, or I should say, eliminate part of the issue being the DME.

If it runs, it probably isn't the DME. If the DME isn't happy, it shuts everything off and the car won't even start.

These cars can be hugely complex and expensive for problems like this.
Before jumping into this "adventure" I suggest penciling out what a new turbo installation will cost plus several days of engine management labor @ near $100/hr and see how committed to this car you are.
I have had several of these cars and love the way they drive, but I would hate to have to pay retail cost for the more involved repairs ...

About your question-
Remove all the intake plumbing off the turbo and run the engine by holding the AFM door open slightly. If oil is pouring out the compressor housing you need a turbo. If not, remove the oil supply and run the car to see if the smoking goes away. (Could be leaking to the exhaust side only-but unlikely) If not you may have an engine problem.

A few hundred dollars of professional advice may go along way to saving you a lot of money & heartache.

Not worried about labor, my husband is taking care of that. Just wanted to make sure that the DME couldn't also be part of the problem. Going to do a leak down test and compression check to determin if it's worth keeping or parting out of this car. It is kind of a shame to part out, because the body is straight. Oh well. Thanks for all the input.
