Paint problem...

Postby 4est on Thu Jan 11, 2007 9:46 am

I did some grinding in and near my car. I had the sunroof out, so I put a tarp over it. Super-fine metal sawdust got on the car, and rusted on the surface (especially under the tarp). It's in the paint, not the metal. Suggestions? If it's notsomething I can fix, what's a good paint shop?

I don't want it to get any worse, so I need to act now.

Won't it wash off and then buff it out a bit?

Some, not all. I don't have a power buffer, nor buffing compound. I did try some wax and elbow grease, and was not impressed with the result. This metal is more like flour than sand. It turns my buffing rag rust orange. My buddy has a buffer, so I'm off the Kragen for some buffing compound...

Forest,

If you don't have a buffer, then the "Mothers California Gold Clay Bar" may work. I used it to remove paint over-spray and I was amazed how well it worked.

It claims to remove all kinds of contaminants like: acid rain, tree sap, rail road metal pariticles, bird s&*% :), bake dust etc. without damaging your paint.

I agree with Martin, clay would be better, the buffer will likely pick up the particals and spin them deep into the paint. You might get them out, but be left with the worst swirl marks you can imagine or just eat through the paint if you don't know exactly what you are doing.
