I am contemplating running my 2002 Boxster S in MSS and having a dedicated set of wheels/tires to do so. I currently have 18's on it with brand new Pilot Sports. Does it make sense to get 17's or another set of 18's and better autocross tires or only if I want to go to S class?Can lightweight wheels be used in S/S class? Or should I just bite the bullet and spend the money to put in a new clutch in my beater 944S? Opinions and advice are appreciated.

There are a lot options for 17 inch tires and they are more attractively priced. A used set of 17's can be had for relatively little money.
I would pick up a set of 17's and run 225/235 Front and 255 Rear in your favorite S/S legal tire. (Greatly improved turn in)

When you are done schooling all the S/S cars you can throw a set of R-rated tires on and make that plunge.

I prefer two sets of wheels as frequent aggressive AXing tends to create unfovorable tire wear resulting in road noise and uneven tracking.

..... And as it happens, I have a set of 7.5" ( or 7.0") x 17" and 9 X 17" wheels from a 993. They are original OEM Mille Miglia wheels and center caps, they are freshly powder coated, and they should fit your Boxter without adapters. Light, clean, sharp.

Oh .... did I mention you get a free set of shaved RA-1 Toyo's 225 fronts and 255 rears with those? You can't run the RA-1's in S/S class, but S class.....

Regarding tire sizes - if you are thinking of competing in this year's Porsche Parade in "showroom stock", only tires that are exactly the same sizes as the Porsche OEM sizes are allowed.

Any variance in tire sizes (which are allowed under Zone 8 competition rules) kick you out of showroom stock into a higher competition class.
