Toyo R888

Postby Tawfik on Fri Jun 22, 2007 11:50 am

I have been told by a Toyo distributor that the RA1s are getting replaced by the R888. This tire has been in use in Europe for a while and is now being introduced to the US. i was told this will be extremey similar to the RA1 in terms of longevity and care but that this will have a much stiffer sidewall.
Anyone ever tried these or have some feedback?
Are these currently available now for purchase?

Thats been the story for over a year now. From what I can tell, the tire isn't any better than the RA1 and costs more, but until they actually decide to sell it here, I don't know for sure. It is suppose to be about the same compound with larger blocks so shaving shouldn't be so important. I hope they keep the RA1 as it is such a good all around tire/value and the few details I have, don't lead me to believe the R888 will be much of a step forward.

I guess it takes quite a while to get DOT approval. :?:

Last fall when there was a shortage of RA-1s, I was told it was because Toyo was expecting to have switched to R-888 in the US by then, so production of RA-1s had already ramped down.

They were released this week in the US. toyo.com has the sizes available with more to be released throughout the year.

I know a few people that got a free set to try out a few months ago. Their impression is that they get up to temperature similar to the RA1s, however, they tend to get greasy toward the end of long run sessions. The good news is:

1. the sidewall is stiffer than the RA1

2. Wet performance is better than the RA1

3. the tread is not as deep as the RA1 so no need for shaving and no tread squirm.

The bad is that they are extremely noisy as they wear.

You can flip them if running in dry conditions.

Wear appears to be similar to that of the RA1. According to toyos website, they like A LOT of camber and caster.
