Exhaust System for 997

Postby MarkeTeixeira on Thu Jul 12, 2007 4:50 pm

What exhaust system would you go with, PSE or aftermarket. Which aftermarket would you go with? Evolution, Supersprint, Fabspeed, Billy Boat, Milltek, Remus, Dansk or other. And have you actually Dino'd any on a 997 S for ++HP?

The exhaust that sounds the best to me is Tubi Style (mufflers + headers), but there are many that I have not heard. I do not know of any reputable HP claims; maybe search on Rennlist?

+1 on the Tubi. My friend in Indy has them and they sound great. Don't expect any HP gains as Porsche has done their job with the stock system (just a little to consumer sounding).

Is there any aftermarket exhaust that you can turn off and turn on? The PSE can do that, but it is around $3,000 for parts and labor.

Only the PSE is switchable, but most people disable the switch so it is on all the time. ;)

All the exhaust systems are going to be several thousand dollars installed, assuming both headers and mufflers. It will be cheaper if you only do mufflers, but the sound enhancement will be partial and definitely no HP gains.

I was thinking only the muffler... I think I have enought hp stocked to enjoy. Will eventually want to upgrade the headers, cayt and intake. However, don't want to put strain on the engine. If you do those upgrades, do you have to adjust the CPU on the engine?

Why do you plan to make all of those changes? If your goal is increased performance, I think you will find it difficult at best to get more hp. Most 996 and 997 upgrades that you list have been proven to do virtually nothing.

Exhaust system is one item that is commonly done, mostly for the sound, as most dyno tests show near zero or negative change.

The only way I would do those upgrades is if I get +ponies on a dyno. As is, the car is already a great set up. I have a short shifter and I think the only upgrade need currently is a sporty sound. I rather spend the money on tires for AX or DE.

I would wander over to forums.rennlist.com, and do some searching. It really doesn't seem like many people can prove any increase in power on these engines from intakes and exhausts.

Also, look at the info on plenums, all the rage. I helped a guy trying to bring to market a competitor to the RSS plenum (which costs $1000), and I've done about 20 dynos of my car (2003 996 C2), and proven that all it does is shift the power curve a bit (and not in a way that I like). He's back to the drawing board, but I haven't heard from him in a month now. People are also claiming better throttle response, but I've been running with and without and seen nothing.

Beware the placebo effect, and beware the 'honest' opinions of people who plunked down $1000+ on a mod. ;)

Personally, I would change my exhaust if I could make it quieter without sacrificing power. I prefer stealth.
