This is a follow on topic to my first topic, Project: Rebuilding a '91 Porsche 911.

On the positive, I took the '911 to Black Forest and had them evaluate it first. I gave them the 911 for a month since I am traveling. They are just now completing the engine rebuild (plus misc. transmission and other parts). They reported that costs have risen $500+ in the last month for parts due to $/Euro changes. (Note: they warned me of the price increase before beginning work.) Total cost $11K. So, it's coming in at about 55% - 60% of what the dealer wanted for the same rebuild.

Now the 911 is red with salt water damage to the paint. I live on the coast and sea fog in the mornings have taken a toll over the last few years. So phase 2 of the rebuild is to get a new paint job.

I've just gotten a quote for repainting the Porsche. $8K!! Now I'm sure that it will be a high end professional job. He wants to "paint you car properly, is to detrim car, sand old paint down, do all bodywork, primer and refinish 2 stage with clear coat and rub out. put car back together. complete paint job $6500. striping car extra $1000. any rubber pieces that need to be replaced."

I'm all for a beautiful paint job. I'm all for a classic Porche that looks stunning. However, it's a car with a total value of $20 - $30K. This paint job feels like overkill for what I want. Anyone got experience with someone who is more reasonable in paint jobs - either willing to offer a number of paint job levels or more reasonable in costs?

Thanks.

Hi Patrick,
Save your time and get a quote from Mark at Victory race paints.
You might check his recent paint job on Black Forest's (Head Mech) Mark Kinninger's blue RSR.
Right now he is doing Tom Tweed's ax car.
Jim Copp and I had our 993 track cars painted there this year too.
Give Mark a call he likes Porsches!
Best,
Mike
