trailering a 944

There do not seem to be any easy and obvious tie down points under my 944 :? I was thinking of using the sway bar in the front (it is stock, non adjustable), and maybe the bumper stanchions/shock absorbers in the rear. Any thoughts or suggestions?

There should be some tie downs on each side of the front frame rails just behind the radiator. For the rear, I use some I bought off an ebay seller that work great. They bolt on each side behind the rear wheels in existing holes. He has some for sale now for $15.00 each at this link.

In the past I have also used an axle strap through the wheels front and rear. But I stopped because I have heard some negative comments about messing up wheel alignment settings.

DON'T use the sway bar. The mount is not very strong and any pull will bend them.

I used the wheels most of the time, but the torsion bar also works well in the back.

I just dragged my latest project 931 home using a new tie down system that worked really great. You remove one lug nut from each wheel and place what amounts to a very large threaded sleeve with a tow hook on it. Clipped the straps to that and away I went. Bought them off a guy on Ebay, but Performance Products sells them new. Going to try using them on the GP car in the front next time it goes somewhere.

Skip Shirley makes something like this here in town. He runs the Auto Museum in Balboa Park, and is an active PCASDR member. He also advertises in the Panorama. Contact him about getting a set.

Thanks for the tip Dan. I could use a set. Performance sells them for $ 149(!) a piece

That is exactly what I have, but there is no way they are $149 each. That is an insane price for these. Even for a set of 4 that is about double what they should be.

You are right, it's an insane price! That's exactly why I did not buy them. Who is your E-bay seller?
Maybe he has a few more...

Just got lucky looking for them.

The Automotion lug nut tie downs are $149 for a set of four. Unfortunately Skip Shirley is selling a "half set" of two for more than that. Either way, too much SSS for me. I'll use the $15 tow hooks in the back and the frame in the front

Tow hooks will work fine. One point to remember, go straight out the back to a tie down point with them, don't cross the straps. Very strong that way, not so strong with a side load.

Thanks Brian. That makes perfect sense when I read it but I wonder if I would have figured that out on my own. The last car I saw trailered had the rear straps crossed and I remember thinking "Oh, that looks like a good idea..."

Yeah, that was my thought the first time also, until I started cranking them down. Then the second thought was, oh that was a bad idea. But nobody saw it so it never happened!

I've always gone through the wheels and I haven't had any alignment prob's that I know of?
Just make sure you buy flat hooks if you do this so that they will fit through the wheels.

I can't believe skip Shirley's design costs more from Skip than from retailers? Perhaps he doesn't want to mess with retailing them at all?

I lost my front camber on two separate occasions going through the front wheels. Maybe it depends on how tight you ratchet the straps? I have had no problems since I moved the front straps to the chassis.
