"Alternate car" rules for Dec AX

Postby LUCKY DAVE on Sun Nov 11, 2007 8:34 am

Just what ARE the rules (if any) concerning vehicles for this event?
Are any "other" vehicles welcome? Are we only talking about the Enzo Ferrari hiding behind the estate, or something else wicked fast like 125 shifter karts?
Or... is causing your competitors debilitating laughter the object?
For example, I thought of running my Suburban in T /SS (tank, street stock)-full of groceries, properly tied down, of course- or maybe running F/L class (forklift). How fast do you have to be able to go without getting DQ'd? Does the timing equipment have a calendar function?
How many wheels are required? (super moto race bike ) Are tracked vehicles OK? Is it OK if they have reaper blades on the front and a grain shute out the back? Are rocket engines legal if the car passes tech?
Expiring minds want to know.....

I believe it has to be a 'safe' closed 4 wheel vehicle. No karts, motorcycles or anything that the tech people feels is unsafe. If you have a specific question and are worried, ask. It is just a fun event to try the Enzo, wagon, Mini, Lightening, Echo, Prius or other reasonable car you are wondering the track performance of.

One fairly important note - ALL Zone 8 Competition Rules apply as to Safety (unless explicitly modified by the AX/Safety Chairs for this event, which is unlikely). For the full rules, see http://zone8.pca.org/rules.htm
(A little thing called "Event Insurance" means we all have to follow the rules...)

Regarding the "shifter cart" comment above -

XIV Safety Considerations, part M, says:
"All parts of the tire which normally contact the road must be covered by the fender when measured from a vertical drop from the fender edge through the center line of the wheel."

I.e., no carts or other "open wheel" vehicles (or ones with partial fenders over the tops). Sorry - you can't bring your BMW Sauber F1 to play. :(

Also, the usual noise limits at the Stadium apply, so any vehicles with straight pipes or other open exhausts aren't likely to be allowed.

In general, any automobile that you could purchase from a dealer and register for normal (and legal!) use on public highways "should" be ok (subject to tech and safety assessments). Vehicles with a high center of gravity are obviously discouraged due to rollover risks, and if you are thinking about bringing something particularly exotic, you should read (and understand) at least the Safety section of the Rules before showing up and being told you won't be allowed to run.

"NO KARTS!!"

Absolutely right! We woudn't want them to make our expensive cars look like.....go carts.

ps: I detect a serious lack of sense-of-humor here......

Actually Ted is wrong. Kart are probably allowed if they are the full bodied type. Usually 250cc karts have covered wheels as part of a full aero package and would likely pass tech, but you do have to be pretty insane to drive one

All kidding aside, since only F1 cars are faster around a road course than a well tuned and driven Kart, it makes sense to disallow them. No street car is in their league, no matter how exotic or expensive.

BUT... are trailers legal???

Ted is not always right, but he is seldom wrong.

PCNA specifically restricts karts from Porsche events. It is an insurance isuue. In fact we can not even hold a meeting at a facility that has karts.

I don't believe it matters if its a shifter or partially bodied racer.

I do have a sense of humor, however, I just didn't want you guys running in the wrong direction with the ball.

I would not be so sure there. The Mazda (what is it a 2300) could be a lot of fun.

Can you show me where that is in the rules? I can't find it and if it is a national requirement, we may want to add it. Also, very curious how they define the line between a kart and something like a spec racer???
