Is my tranny blown?

As I pulled off the freeway on my way home from the AX last night in my 944S, the shifter felt like it was disconnected, just flopping around, and the car wouldn't go into gear. While flopping the shifter around, eventually the car went into fourth, seemingly of its own accord, and, with great protest from the clutch, I limped home. Blown Tranny? And if so, is there a reasonable source for a rebuilt one?

Actually sounds more like a linkage to me. Any noises when driving? Can you shift with the engine off?

Probably the linkage-
Pull the shifter boot up and take a look.
If that's OK look at he shift linkage in back.
If it's the Transmission... I have one for an "S".

If it is the front linkage I have a cheaper fix for you.
Let me know.

Yep, It is the front linkage!! It looks like it is missing a circlip to hold the shift linkage pin into the shifter so it just fell out Thanks guys.

So Leigh, is it true you went out and bought a whole 'nother car just to get that circlip? Steve or someone might have had just the part rather than a whole extra car.

Curt, I am a little disappointed by the tone of your comments. One could almost misconstrue what you were saying as suggesting that the purchase of another car when in need of a circlip is questionable for some reason.

I have assured my wife that the purchase of another car when one finds oneself in such unfortunate circumstances (in need of a circlip or other exotic part), is, in fact, a well established and respected approach in this club. Surely you weren't intimating otherwise? If I recall, the prefered approach is to have double protection, so I am keeping an eye out should such an opportunity present itself.

If you had any sense at all you would be scanning the "for sale" ads for a back up GT3 or two. I'll not do you the disservice of casting aspersions should your search bear fruit. This club has its traditions after all.

Indeed I was mistaken. You are absolutely correct, and post haste I will begin the search for a "parts" GT3. I do think I will need your help in explaining this idea to Janet, but heck, she'll probably be all for it if she thinks the car might for some reason go faster. Could you emphasize that part of the program?
I truly meant no disrespect and now see the benefits of a defensive strategy of having a back-up car. I guess all the real race teams do it. Why not us?
