PCA SDR

Has anyone tried these for track use? I'm considering them due to the optimal sizing for my wheels, and wonder if they're as good a tire as the RA-1 in durability and traction.

Any experience with these? Any idea of the cost difference (+ or -) vs. the RA-1? Just curious.

Do they have the 225's out yet in 15"? I heard they were not coming out until Mar/Apr. Neil runs them on his Turbo.

I'm waiting to hear from Brian S. about them. The website indicates 225/15 and 235 / 15 (ooh, just under legal size for no additional points ) will be available "soon."

Bump: Still looking for comments (esp. critisisms) regarding the performance of the R888. Anyone? Greg Phillips? Jack Miller? Tom Tweed? Mike Gagen? You guys are all up on the "tire" scene. Heard anything?

I may experiment in '08, or reluctantly go back to 225/15's all-round on the RA-1's ( ...since there is no longer a 245/15 in the RA-1 ).

Any info would help.

I believe that Dave Gardner is running R888.

I'm on my second set of R888's. I like them as well if not more than the RA1's. They do cost more but I guess that is to be expected. You could look at the Nitto NT01 tires. It's the same compound as the R888's with a different tread pattern. They may be cheaper but I doubt it. I talked to a Nitto sales guy at CA Speedway when I was there with Speed Ventures. He gave me the low down. Obviously he was pro Nitto and the street racing scene but said the Toyo's were the same compound. I got several track days and AX's out of the tires and never noticed them getting greasy or going away on long runs. Sheila is on her second set of R88's as well and having driven her car in a few events I experienced the same behaviour on her car.

I just traded some emails with Bryan Shackleford and he said that the R888's in 15" will be out in January. I waiting for his comments on the 888's VS. RA-1 for my 944S. Didn't ask him about price---

Help me with this. RA-1's are DOT 100 so under the new 2008 rules if I had for the "I" class RA-1's that were 235 x 15 then I would take 2 pts for the tire and 2 pts for the width. Correct. What is the DOT on the R888's.

From their website it is listed as 100, same as the RA1.

RA1's and R888 are the same at 100. This means Greg would still get 12 laps with his standard "drifting" style of driving.

OK, I did finally get down to cord on a tiny strip on the outside of one rear RA1 tire at the last DE. But you have to work really hard to wear out the RA1s
Hopefully the R888 will be as forgiving and won't go up in smoke like some tires we have seen

Hey Greg, did you ever consider drifting that car? Those guys love going sideways and smoking the tires.

Yes but Dan Andrews was going in a straight line when his tires were going up in smoke But you do have ABS

I have all of the cheating technology. I can't smoke em like Dan did under braking. That was great to watch but really hard on the tires.

Ron: 2 points for 50 to 100 rated runbber; 2 points for 230 to 245 width = 4 points for tires

I don't know if you're taking many points for your 3.2 engine, but with the points system the way it is now (2008) you may be dancing close to the "P" edge of the "I" class (Who, me? "IP"?!?)

If I count my points:

4 for tires/size
2 for aero-spoilers (New in '08 !!! ) (I have a factory chin-spoiler.)
1 for strut brace.

.... that's 7 points: Cr@p...... I'm on the edge of "P" too!

I wonder what the Young "Snickers" car will run in. With a lightened car, and some fairly tasty mods, I'm fairly sure Paul-squared will be in IP?
