Battery Problem

Hello Guys,
I tried starting my 2001 996 and found that the battery was dead. Furthermore, I couldn't open the hood to access the battery because the electronic switch required juice to operate.

I called the Porsche dealer and they informed me about the fuse box access electrical pole.

I purchased a battery charger at Pep Boys, a Vector 1093d. I connected the cables to the pole and ground and plugged in the charger.

I tried activating the hood switch and I could hear it cycle, but the hood failed to open.

Not enough juice? The charger won't let me add more amperage without a direct connection to the battery. It issues a Fault 2 error.

Google for the win.

Apparently a battery (not a charger) is required to provide sufficient amperage to activate the hood lock.

The hood's now open.

OK, so now the question is during the process of charging, is it required to remove the plugs on a Moll Kamina 580 42 battery since it has a vent pipe integral to the battery?

Never remove battery caps when charing!
That is an old wives' tale (or grandfathers tale I would imagine)
