Porsche Technical related discussions.

Steve,

Great job as always. Now if you can stop making everyone else happy and keeping them up to date with the latest greatest rules changes, maybe you can get old 97 running again. It's been way too long since we've seen your 914/6 on the track.

Being behind the scenes, I can certainly attest to the monumental work Steve has done for our club.

Yes, Please! Maybe have Dan be his co-Driver?

No issues here now--nothing but a few picky typos that I noticed:

Driving Events Rule #04 -- Cayenne Classification
"of your Cayenne" s/b "off your Cayenne"

Driving Events Rule #11 – Helmets
"Must use a head sock for Improved class and higher" s/b "Must use a head sock for Modified class and higher" (mentioned before in my previous post, but apparently got overlooked)

Driving Events Rule #23 – Suspension components
"The purpose of this change is wording is clarification" s/b "The purpose of this change in wording is clarification"

Good job explaining things in plain English, Steve! This should help a lot of people understand the rules better (or at least the ones who use the website and this forum.) Cookies are done, bagged up and ready to bring down whenever you finish up on my car. Now get back to work!

That'd be great. Only problem is, the seat is fixed to the floor. :( No offense, but I like my legs from the knees down.  I'm afraid you'll just have to live with me in IS, Paul. But don't worry, Monica will be in IS, too. :? (Boy ... I'm gonna pay for that!)

For those who are having heartburn over the cost of installing race seats, or do not want to sacrifice the reclining function by installing a full race bucket, and require streetable comfort at a reasonable price (about half of a single Recaro), I would look at these Hunsaker seats:
http://hunsakersports.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=194

They have the 5-point slots, and are only $340 for a PAIR of seats, plus $40 for the brackets and $80 shipping. The brackets may have to be custom fit for your Porsche, but you cannot beat that price!

I have never seen them, but they come highly recommended by at least one fellow--see this thread on the Pelican Parts forum:

Seats

I’m looking for a new seat because, from I can tell, I can’t use my stock seat with my 5-point harness anymore in my 914.

The above seats look nice. But I have a question. A lot of the seats do not say if they are SFI or FIA approved competition seats. Do the have to be for autocross.

Dano,

When you start the year out on top there's only one place to go. I see a silver Carrera coming up on you really fast. I think he used to be a 914 driver.

From the rules booklet:
Harnesses should be installed with an approved competition seat. If harnesses
are installed and the seat is not an SFI or FIA approved competition seat, the
entrant needs to bring documentation to prove that the installation follows the
manufacturers instructions.

When properly installed, 5 or 6-point harnesses are allowed at Autocross
events, but they are not required. Cars that do not have 5 or 6-point harnesses
must have fully functional factory restraint systems.

Factory belts more than 20 years old, or visibly frayed or damaged at any age,
must be replaced with new belts.

Seats

Postby chris914 on Wed Feb 06, 2008 3:12 pm

Thanks for helping me. I just want to clarify that that non-SFI or non-FIA could be used. That’s if I’m correct from reading the following “If harnesses are installed and the seat is not an SFI or FIA approved competition seat, the entrant needs to bring documentation to prove that the installation follows the manufacturers instructions.”

When it says, “the entrant needs to bring documentation to prove that the installation follows the manufacturers instructions.” Am I correct that they mean the manufacturers instructions for both the seat and the harnesses?

Also, if the seat is not SFI or FIA what guidelines do I need to use to choose an allowable seat?

Is there something more then the following?

“When not using an approved competition seat, the following must be met:
1. All high back seats, including but not limited to those seats where the
headrest is an integral part of the seat must be equipped with a “Halo”
strap or similar device attached to the seat back to locate the harnesses
if the use of a Halo strap is part of the harness manufacturer’s
approved configuration. The “Halo” strap fits on the seat back and has
sewn in loops to locate the shoulder harness straps. This is not
required for approved racing seats that provide proper harness strap
slots.
2. “H” style harnesses installed prior to 2004 may remain if they are in
good condition and adjustment and if the use of the H style is part of
the harness manufacturer’s approved configuration.
3. Seats that eliminate substantial contact of the lap belt with the
occupant will be disallowed.”

Once again, Thanks!

Don't worry Dan, everything will be back to normal by Sunday afternoon.

Define "normal".

Don't think of it as "losing to me" ... think of it as "helping to enrich my AX experience"... you know; part of helping me learn how to drive a 911. After all: I've only driven in 5 or 6 AX's since buying the darned thing. I still can't figure out where the water goes in these radiators.

I didn't mean to serve you up any humble-pie ... even if it's only two week's worth. I know I have a BIG piece waiting for me on Sunday.

See you (from the bottom of the roster) on Sunday.

You need a race seat with sub and shoulder slots from the manufacturer. Lap slots if the sides are high.
No H-strap, no halo.
Documention from the seat manufacturer must state that it was intended for 5-point use.
SFI or FIA approval makes your life much easier.
