993 wont start

Postby elcap00 on Sun Aug 10, 2008 8:57 am

My 98' 993 will not start!

I didnt drive it for 3 months---went to start it and found it had a bad battery---let it sit for another 3 months. Bought new battery and it fired up.

I let it idle for about 4-5 minutes as I was on the phone and it died. I got it started a few more times but, would soon die. A few times I would turn it over until oil pressure went up to 1 bar. No luck---came back about 10 minutes later and it would start to then die off if I didnt give it gas.

I am thinking:
1. bad fuel filter (Hopefully rear)
2. bad fuel pump

I checked all the fuses and am now going to check the fuel pump.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Any input is greatly appreciated.

The DME itself or the DME relay? I carry a spare DME relay in my car at all times.

Another easy to avoid this problem is buy a second 993. Mine will be listed for sale in the classifieds this week to make room for the newest addition to the family-Midnight blue metallic 2008 Cayman S courtesy of Pioneer and Chris Huck.

Kris--it was just the relay.

Mark---Ah...that new car smell mingled with fresh German autobahn air.....nothing better. :)

This is a great question: What should the 993 owner have in the glove box to deal with known but easily fixed problems, say if you were about to drive cross-country.
DME relay sounds like one thing, anything else?

Check spare tire, jack, and compressor operation.
Carry spare fan belt and ensure that the required 12-point star tool is in your tool kit.

Check what size fan and alternator belts you have as they vary from year to year.
This applies to 964 cars as well.
The magic fan holding wrench is not part of the tool kit and must be purchased separately.
You can't change the belt without one.
The part number is 999.571.052.02
It is under $30

We have these in stock as we add them to 964/993 car tool kits for new customers.
But they car be ordered from any Porsche dealer.

That part number is correct, but it is definitely part of the standard tool kit. It is #5 on the very first page of the 964 PET.

I should have said it's not in a 993 tool kit...
The 964 reference was to the fact that belts and all the proper tools apply to both models.
Just because a 964 came with one 18 years ago doesn't mean it is still there...

Check your tool kit? It may be missing several tools and it is easier to replace them now than when you are stuck on the side of the road.

I find it really curious that the fan belt tool was dropped from the tool kit for 993. Does this mean that 993 drivers are less mechanically inclined? :?
