Hello Guys,
My best friends dad had/has a 912 he's kept since the 70's. What separates this model from the 911 of the same era?

It depends on the year but basically a 912 is a 911 with these exceptions-

911 engine replaced with a 1600cc 4-cyl. 356SC motor (basically)
Non-vented brakes
912 has shorter gears AFMSX
Usually no sway bars
Usually boge not koni shocks

912 was the entry level stripper, but can be equiped to preform quite well, (just ask those AS/S guys)

One major change to the 912 was in 1976.

This model is a long wheelbase version that makes it a little more stable at high speed. It also uses a modified version of the 914/2.0 Liter engine with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection. There were only 2,000 of these made but are worth the search.

Porsche stopped making the 912 in 1969 but made it again in 1976.

Couple of other details, from what I know; the '69 912, like the 911, has a slightly longer wheel-base, also - slightly different seats (higher back with head rest), and a 5-speed 901 transaxle than some of the earlier 912's ... as far as I know, anyway. Oh. The dash has slightly different cosmetics, too.

Very cool car to drive and track. Extremely well balanced, quick and nimble. Just a tad under-powered. Keep the rev's under 5800 rpm and the motor should last a good long time, IMHO.

Jim B. speaks of the 912E. It has the similar body style, etc. of the '74 911, with bigger bumpers, etc. The 2-litre Jetronic puts out some decent power, too.

I don't think you can compare a 912 to a 911. Apples to cider, IMHO.

Actually I had a '69 912 with a 4 speed from the factory. The gears were so far apart A-H-Q-X that I installed a 5 speed with A-F-M-S-X gears and liked it much better, so ignore a 4 speed.

Last time I rebuilt a 912 engine I had a hard time finding good parts- things like the cylinder heads and crankcase are hard to find.

The 1976 car has a VW derived engine with much easier to find parts as well as a 915 gearbox.

If it were me, I would buy a 911 instead.
