993 engine flashing...

Postby 4est on Mon Jan 05, 2009 11:40 am

for you AR1 and 2 guys...

Do you use any flashing or the rubber gaskets that go between the motor and the chassis when using the 3.6 in a full on racecar? I fumbled around that stuff changing plugs and wires, and wonder if I need it at all. My car is a dedicated track car now too, so it doesn't sit in traffic for long periods of time. Mostly, it's moving when on. I am adding another oil cooler as well. So the question:

Can I remove the flasking and rubber gasket surround without negative impact on a track 993?

Leave it there.
The engine fan creates a negative pressure and it will pull dirt and heat into the engine compartment even at speed.

I agree with Steve. I'd leave it, if it were me.

My first old VW suffered greatly when I pulled the sheetmetal and rubber from around the engine bay. Not only did it get messy and pull dirt into the air cleaners; even when moving it ran a tad hotter from warm air pulled up from exhaust area and off the road. I think air moving under the car wants to "wander" into the engine bay instead of out the bottom/back of the car.

With the "tin and rubber" in, I think you get clean separation of clean air up top and "dirty" air below, IMHO.
