Hub spacers...

How far can you go? I need to move my front wheels out about an inch, and I see spacers made that big by reputable companies. I always hear the rumor-mill stuff about 'don't do it', but who has direct experience (good and bad) with spacers. I need to fill out the GT2 width front fenders, and would prefer not to have to spend thousands on custom offset wheels. I already have 3 sets of wheels, and would lilke to use them. Spacers can't be all bad, or there wouldn't be such a demand. Discuss...

For track use, I feel comfortable with long studs and spacers. I am not comfortable with spacers that use bolts,
and have seperate wheel nut studs built in. You can get "factory" studs up to 100mm, which will be about 51mm
longer than stock, and allow spacers of up to 2". For some of my wheels, I do use the full 51mm of spacers.

What Paul said...
Too much front offset will give you weird braking on an ABS car but you can just hold onto the wheel tighter!

Steve, I didn't think you used brakes? :P

Is there any difference between the years for lug STUDs? I have found studs online that say they are for '72-89' or for '924S'. Aren't all lug studs the same? Does anyone have a local source?

Not talking about later model lug BOLTS. Regular old lug studs with seperate lug nuts...

Quick answer is yes, there is a difference. We had a hard time finding them for our 996. Had to get them from a race shop in NY as I recall. The Racers Group may have them for your car, but it was a lot tougher than we expected.

Yes, and No
Duncan's car is a different issue...

Porsche's up to Boxster/996 use the same type wheel stud.
The lengths differ and some are have non-threaded sections.
When people say it fits model XX they mean that is the stock size.
Any of the local Porsche shops can get you these studs in a day or two, just provide the length you want.

I'm not sure what stud length was standard for the 993 C4S fronts - I assume it's between 45-50mm
You will want to consider 72mm (about 1" extra) or 100mm (about 2"). Either will work with the open
steel nuts. The 100mm allows for more front track, and/or larger offset wheels, but takes longer
to thread the nut on (and a deeper socket), plus is more exposed to the threads being munged up.

Thanks, all!

I have Carrera Lightweights and want to use a 21 or 28mm spacer. will I need the 100mm studs, or will the 72 suffice. No difference in price, I just don't want to be short by 1 thread and don't necessarily want 25mm+ sticking out there for no purpose. I am betting the 21s would fit with the 72, but the 28 won't....

Forest,
I have a pair of Porsche hub centric 21mm spacers for sale. I believe the stock size studs for the rear of late 944's is 45mm and they use a 66mm to mount these spacers on the early 944's with steel arms. 45 +21 =66.
Give me a call.
