wanted 5 - 7mm hub centric spacers

Postby kleggo on Sat Mar 13, 2010 7:32 pm

Hi
I'm looking to buy a set of 5 - 7mm hub centric spacers for 997front wheels.
Thought i'd ask here before buying retail.

Thanks

Craig

Craig:

Curious - why can't you use the regular 6mm ones that have snug bolt holes (from aftermarket supplers)?
Thant's what use on Butch.

Craig-

I don't think spacers that thin can be "hub-centric" in that they are not even as thick as the raised portion of the hub itself that enters the rim center hole, at least on the early cars. There is still some engagement of the hub and rim even with the spacer on. Only a thicker spacer that completely covers the raised portion of the hub can have a similar ring built up on the outside to bear the wheel load. I have a pair of the flat 5x130 bolt pattern, 1/4" thick spacers as in Paul's link I would sell for $20 if you want them.

Tom is correct.
For example the 20mm hub centric spacers you see on 944/928/930 have a 10mm lip so if you use a 6mm spacer you still have contact.
Remember you need a minimum of 14mm of thread contact on the studs with steel lug nuts and 20 with aluminum.
That's 10 turns for steel and 14 for aluminum.

Don't want those pretty wheels falling off!

If you need them, I've got a set of 10 new factory 996/997 GT3 wheel bolts (the ones with the red aluminum ball washers) which are 5mm longer than stock. These are the same ones that come with the factory 5mm spacer kit, and are a little nicer than the plain steel bolts you can buy from H&R. I don't think I'm going to use them any time soon, so I'd let them go for $75.

Porsche's up to and including 993s use a wheel nut and the stud is in the hub.
Porsche Boxster, 996 and on use a bolt; so these two systems are not interchangeable.

The wheel mounting is the same, just not what holds them on.
996/997 wheels are a popular upgrade for 993.

996 TT wheels on a 993 C4S is a sweet upgrade.

Thanks for all the input.

Tom, i'll take you up on your offer. If you bring them to PDS, i'll bring you $20. :D Thank you.

Wheel confusion
Yes, i have the 993 and usually use 996 TT wheels.
Maya has a 997.2 that we recently bought 993 NB Hollow Spoke wheels for her to use for PDS without burning up her expensive Michelins. For some reason i have accumulated several sets of 18" tires ??????
The 993 wheels only allow for ~ 3mm clearance between caliper body and inner spoke face, hence my asking for spacers.

Russell, i may take you up on your offer, after i count thread engagement as recommended by Steve G.

Cheers
