I need help working with the factory diagrams, specifically, what the different shades of color mean. Some wires are shown as a solid line, some as a thicker diagonally striped line, some just outlined. The first page of the section shows some things but not this. Any source for learning this stuff?

Also, the car I'm working on (84 944) has burnt up the wiring to the headlight switch, then the ignition switch, and now again the headlight switch. The headlights have not been upgraded to draw more power.

Tim:

Sounds like you are working with a B&W copy of the original color diagram. Color is really needed.

The diagonally striped wires are two-color, like blue wire with a white stripe. This represents exactly what the original wire looked like.
Mind you, after some years it will be faded or (more likely) covered with dirt/grease. The oulined one is light/white that maybe didn't copy well.

There are numbers next to the wires indicating size (1,0 = 1mm wire size, 2,5 means 2.5mm, etc.). Depending on the vintage (1984),
the placement on the diagram indicates where it is in the car (somewhat).

HTH, and I can offer more help off-line if you want.

Paul.
