Need to borrow or "rent"

Postby Dan Chambers on Tue Jun 15, 2010 4:54 pm

I'm looking for a pair of wheels: 7X16 or 8X16 to run the DE with. I have a set of used Hoosiers  that need to be "worn out" :roflmao: and this should be a good venue for that.

So, anyone with a pair of 7x16 or 8x16 (preferably Fuchs) that would loan (or consider some kind of "rent"), please let me know. Otherwise, I'll have to play on the new street tires  ... and those look so nice right now. :burnout:

 Thanks in advance!

ps - I promise to return them looking better than when I got them.

Dan... I've got a pair of 7x16s on the back of my SC. You're welcome to borrow them for the DE. Here's the challenge : Those are my "street wheels". I use 8x15s (mounted with 225 Nittos) on the track. I typically install my "race shoes" the night before an event. So... If you think we can make the exchange a day or two before the DE and then get my street tires re-mounted a day or two after the event, then let's do it. No rent, just pay for the un-mounting and re-mounting. If that makes sense give me a call.

Perfect. Thanks, Larry.

I'll set up the "mount-dismount" schedule with Steve at C2. He's good about that stuff. I'll try to set up a "Friday afternoon borrow - Monday afternoon return" schedule and we can do the deal. No problem on the mounting/balancing fee.

Thanks, Heaps!

Dan:

I can do one better if it helps. I can lend you a set of original Fuchs 8X16 for the front and 9X16 for the rear. These rims are the ones I used to use for my 1986 944 Turbo so should be a good fit. You can call me on my cell at (619)985-7716.

Be careful with the 9x16's especially with Hoosiers. Check your clearance on the spring plate nuts. All SC's are different and there is always a chance the 9x16's will have fitment issues.
8x16's will not work in the front of your SC unless you have de-cambered struts or a lot of negative, and even then will most likely require rolled fenders.
The 8x16's in the rear will work fine with a small spacer.

Otto, thanks. The tire size is 225, so the 7x16 front and rear (rear with spacers) should be fine. Since the tires aren't massive-wide, a 7" should do fine all 'round. On the other hand: if you ever have interest in selling those wheels (and helping me stay in your rear-view mirror 0.5 seconds longer) ... call me first.

Dan A: thanks for the heads-up. Yeah, rubbing/bolts/fitment is an issue in a "narrow" car.

Dave Q: Dude! How can you 'dis' your old ride? :surr:

Dan:

Just in case, and considering the comments, I have 2 extra original Fuchs wheels 8X16 same '86 944 Turbo offset so that you can try going 8" all around if you prefer. In that case, as Dan said, you would need a spacer for the rear. Let me know, I have the wheels in storage. Some have old tires mounted on them.

Dan,

I have a few aftermarket, cast aluminium chrome spoke wheels that came off my 928. I can check the offset and size when I get home but I am pretty sure they are 8X16's. I actually have 4 but one has a small crack that might be weldable...and...I am open to trading them for...I dont know?...something. If you want a spare set of track wheels to beat up.

Those are likely to have the larger offset (~65 mm late offset) than the early 911 needs ((11-23mm offset).
The early (up to '86)944 wheels have a similar offset, but all the 928's had a 52-65 mm offset.

FYI, you do not want to use chromed wheels for competition as they are typically prone to cracking.

DQ - that may be the first time we have agreed on anything...

Well....I guess their "trade value" is pretty much out the window then... Wonder how much I can get for the scrap aluminum?

That is only an issue if you are actually putting some stress or cornering force on the wheels. Should not be a problem with Dan's car yet :beerchug:

Oh fine! This, from the guy who was 0.25 seconds behind me on WAY larger, newer tires. Yeah, bring it, Pal! Maybe you should wait until you can actually beat me in timed runs before giving me grief. :roflmao:
