fender mounted carrera oil cooler

Postby MTrotter on Tue Jul 06, 2010 8:19 am

Does anyone have photos of the front fender mounted oil cooler attached to an SC or other non-carrera car?

Im especially interested in how the top of the cooler is attached to the car. Im looking at it and just a little confused as to how it attached on the upper part of the fender. The lower mount is pretty straight forward but the upper is hidden in all the online DYI's I have found.

Thanks,

Morgan

It is actually attached to the back of the headlight with a bracket (93020792700) and a rubber mount joins the bracket to the cooler (93011019400)

I will send a diagram to your email.

Thanks Steve, It mounts just as I suspected. Do you typically weld the lower bracket? or just drill through and bolt it? one of the lower bracket bolts lines up pretty good... I was thinking about using that bolt then tacking it in place with a small weld.

Morgan:

My Carrera oil cooler bracket is bolted on the bottom, not welded. The top is secured with the oil lines and bracketed. Since I have an odd oil-line route (due to the front-valance center oil cooler) the fender cooler is tight in the area. If you're going to cut out the back of headlight bucket for more air, the bucket bracket might be tricky ... but Steve will know more about that...

That new engine sure is pretty ...

Weld it in as bolting can result in cracking of the bracket or tub in the long run.
The top bracket is not as nessesary and as Dan notes not usable when you vent the cooler through the headlight.
(Something you will want to do for big track use)
The turnsignal scoop kits are a great help to get extra air to the cooler as well.

Good Luck

+1 with the headlight bucket & turn-signal kit ideas.

Also: check out Spal fans for a good fan that will bolt to the cooler. I have a Spal 6" fan that runs off a dash switch for cooling while sitting in traffic/pre-grid. The fans usually come with a 30-amp relay that keeps things happy. I used my old headlight-washer switch location on the dash for the fan switch. If I can wire it, anyone can. Don't forget the shield between the tire and the oil cooler.

Good luck and keep it cool.
