Mahle Oil filter question

Postby Mmagus on Thu Sep 23, 2010 10:58 pm

While looking on Pelican Parts, they noted that the Mahle is and OEM supplier and that the Mahle OC-142 Oil filter for my 924S is the same as the Porsche branded one. Is this accurate?

Thanks!

I believe that is true. Mahle has had a LONG relationship w/ Porsche as a parts supplier.

OC-142 is the right filter for the 2.5L 8V 924S motor. Make sure you are prepared for the amount of oil that will be getting everywhere when you remove an upside down oil filter! Best bet is let the car sit for a few days-though that only helps a little bit.

Thans guys! Paul Y had advised that, unlike many Americian cars, the Porsche OEM was the best choice for a filter with the OC-142 I cn get it at a good price! :D Thanks also for the tip on the upsidedown oil filter. Unfortunatly I am fairly new to Porsches, but the good part of that is 99% of my oil changing expierence comes with the same upsidedown configuration. My wife's Crossfire (which is really a Mercedes CLK 350 with a different skin) is the only upward pointing filter I have delt with.

First the Mahle filter is a good filter.
The trick to reducing the drip is to punch a hole in the top of the filter and let it drain for an hour.
(Hammer and phillips screwdriver)
Better when done with a warm engine.
Then the filter oil will drain back to the block and out the drain plug.

There used to be this cool aftermarket tool that looked like a little water flume that went under the filter and drained the oil out by the right front sway bar bushing.

I think Phil Corwin has made a few of these... Phil?

Mark,
Yes, this is the filter that most of us use. I buy them by the case to get a good price. The critical importance is that it has an anti-drainback valve to keep the oil filter full of oil (which is why it is a mess to change it!). This is key to cold start ups. Many "compatible" filters do not have this valve. This leads to a lot of wear in the engine. Another filter, although very difficult to find and more expensive, is the Mahle OC-75. It is a little taller, so it can accomodate more oil. More important in a Turbo. Not a big deal in a 924 or 944. And yes, Phil's custom tool is a life saver (well - at least a mess saver!).

The OC-75 is the stock part for the 944 turbo. I can get them easily and usually have some in stock. We like to use them on the 944's and 924S's because of their increased capacity in not only oil, but also in filtering.
Another important feature in the factory OEM filters is the bypass in case the filter were to become blocked for any reason. You'd get dirty oil, but at least you'd get oil.
I like the idea of stabbing the old filter while it's still installed so that it can drain. That's smart.
