924S / 944 DIY A/C Delete

Postby Mmagus on Mon Dec 06, 2010 3:18 pm

Though the A/C on Tuffy didn't work from the time I bought him, it never gave me any issues so I just left it there. Then recently the compressor started locking up even though it wasn’t on, it also developed a sound similar to a box of rocks being shaken. Since I have no desire to spend the funds to replace the unit I decided to remove it. As you may know on a 924S or 944 that means finding a way to run the alternator as its on the same belt.

I had seen delete kits with billet mounts and a belt for $125 shipped (FleaBay) but I also found a DIY walkthrough on this site:

http://944spec.org/944SPEC/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=101

I went the DIY route.

So I set to it. Finding an approximate bracket was as simple as a trip to the junk yard, the guy just gave it to me. One thing that the site above doesn’t mention is that his "system" is geared for those who have an aftermarket "cold air" intake, which I do not. It was REALLY frustrating to be there with all the parts assembled doing a test fit to see how the bracket needed altering only to realize that the alternator hit the air box when rotating it up. But I was NOT to be defeated! With a bit of manipulation to the front air box mounts and adjusting of all the hoses related to it, and the brake vacuum hoses I did get it all to fit...and the hood even closes! If you attempt this the trick is only to move the front mounts, the rears have to stay in the factor location or the hood won't close. Also don’t just cut the length of bracket he suggests, since every one is different do a test placement and mark where to cut your particular bracket. The one I had an arch slotted area which was fine but it also had a curved profile which I had to hammer out on an anvil. A Saws-all will cut it just fine and a bit of filing or an angle grinder will clean it up nicely. There is no need to buy the bolt he suggests because you will have a couple of them from the A/C removal.

Total cost of the project... $17, and a 4 hours of my time. Sorry I couldn’t take pictures because I seem to have misplaced my camera. When I find it I will snap some and post them or you can just take a peek at Tuffy at an event.

Enjoy!

Next time remove the compressor and roll on a 5PK835 belt.
Because the belt wraps all the way around the crank and alternator pulley tension doesn't have to be very high.
No kits, no special brackets and all for the price of a belt.
Just don't tell anyone it's the belt off of a 1991 Geo Prizm...

Hola Steve,

I had considered that a I saw a post by someone who did that on one of the sites I go to, but the gent did a follow up about 2 months after and said he had problems with the belt slipping and then finally letting go. Though he may have used a different belt than the one you suggested :D .

Geo Prism hmm? Perish the thought! We poor 924S' have a tough enough rep to shake already...going FLAT OUT as we are. 8)

Continental belt is the key.
I have run several of these setups on 944 and 968's and I replace the belt once a year and have never even has one squeak.

There is very little stress only needing to run the alternator and lots more belt to pulley surface so it is a really unstressed set-up.

Think of it as an upgrade for the Geo part...
