Crank sensor question (not on my car)

Postby Mmagus on Thu Dec 09, 2010 8:15 am

Hi all,

A gent has a 944 that he claims the "crank sensors are out so it does not run". Would that be an actual reason for non-starting? If so how fixable is it...or costly?

Thanks.

There are two sensors and they are the same but provide different information depending on their mounting position, cost around $100 each and require a bit of gymnastics to install correctly because you have to measure the air gap. Oh, and any hardware you drop requires luck or a bellhousing removal to recover from-so put tape over the hole prior to starting! (Don't ask me how I know this...)

Those sensors would definately keep it from starting.

Mark,
Brian is absolutely correct!

Are they out because they failed, which is common. They get old and brittle and the wires break internally or the connector plastic disintegrates. OR - did they drop something down there while they were out?
For the "correct" Porsche part - $150-$200 each. For a Bosch part that works, much less. Gapping them is not that hard, just time consuming. By the way, if you connect them in the wrong position, it won't start! :banghead:

Unfortunately, I have a lot of very recent experience in this area, so feel free to call me if you need help. :surr:
