OK, I pulled out my '72 915 trans to replace fifth gear. Uh- oh, the bearing race in the center housing will spin when turned by hand. What are my options?

Thanks,

Ambitious project Gordon - I'm sure one of the experts will reply, but I'm curious about whether you felt this rebuild was a manageable job? Or do you have special expertise in this? I have thought about trying to do something about my 915 synchros, but I have visions of having to take a basket of parts to somebody to put it back together. Good luck in any case.

I'm no "expert" by any means, but I do have a bit of experience with Porsche mechanicals. I have had my Porsche's last transmission apart several times for refreshes over the years. I've rebuilt several VW transmissions as well. I also have all the special tools needed to do the job. This is probably not a job to learn on, unless you have an experienced friend to help you. Porsche transmissions are unique, complex, specialized pieces of machinery and require a certain expertise.

Look here for everything you want to know about rebuilding one. http://porsche.wikidot.com/system:page-tags/tag/tutorial

LOCKTITE 603 Will be your Huckle Berry, Make sure to use the recomended Cleaner & Primer with it, will fill a .005 gap
If it's worse than that they make other products to do the job :beerchug:

Wevo has a fix for this, California Motorsports in Lake Havasu does too, both require machining of the case. They basically machine out an "8" shaped recess and insert a single machined steel piece to replace both bearing bores. Some other shops machine a ring and pin it in place. Maybe some of the transaxle shops that work on Desert buggies in El Cajon have a fix if you want to stay local. If it were my trans I'd pay to get it fixed right once...

I'm with Jerry on this one. The right glue will work fine.
